  1. Threat of Pop Culture

  2. Loss of Folk Culture • Traditions can be lost as Pop Culture changes • Woman’s roles can change positively as they get more rights and education, but also negatively as they become sexual objects. • Traditional clothing is replaced with blue jeans • Media companies all over world are mostly from U.S. and Britain, which pass on their values.

  3. Threat to Landscape • Carl Saur first focused on cultural landscape. • Pop Culture modifies physical landscape to fit trends, as seen in world spread of golf courses. • Similar Architecture and planning, same businesses and products, similar landscape images. • Folk culture fits into environment instead. • Cultural landscapes are more uniform (same) in pop culture: everywhere you see cars and roads, fast food restaurants, malls, etc.

  4. Pop Culture and Resources • Pop culture causes large consumption of resources like land, energy, and raw materials. • This means the planet is altered more in search and use of these resources. • Nonrenewable energy resources are used on a large scale: petroleum, natural gas, coal. • Renewable energy resources are being used more: hydroelectric, solar, wind, geothermal. • This high scale consumption creates lots of pollution • Sustainable development has become the goal: use of the planet in a way that can be done for a long time.

  5. Summary Create a one-sided multi-flow map showing the effects of pop culture.
