  2. Your Respiratory System • The Vocabulary terms in this lesson are: • Respiratory system. • Epiglottis. • Larynx. • Trachea. • Bronchi. • Diaphragm. • Alveoli.

  3. The Need for Air • Air contains oxygen, a gas the body needs to maintain life. • A person can live only a few minutes without air. Breathing—inhaling and exhaling—is carried out by the respiratory system.

  4. The Respiratory System Air enters through the nose and mouth. The trachea is a windpipe that directs air to the lungs. The throat has two passageways—one for air and one for food. The bronchi are passages through which air enters the lungs. The epiglottis is a flap of tissue that closes over the trachea when you swallow. In the alveoli of the lungs, oxygen is transferred to the blood, and carbon dioxide is removed from the blood. The larynx is the upper part of the respiratory system, which contains the vocal cords. The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle that separates the lungs from the abdomen.

  5. How the Respiratory System Works • The respiratory system has two important jobs. • It supplies oxygen to the blood—oxygen that is then carried to all the cells of the body. • It removes carbon dioxide from the blood and releases it outside the body.

  6. Inhaling and Exhaling • When you inhale, you bring air into your body from outside. When you exhale, you release air to the outside. • In this process, oxygen is exchanged with carbon dioxide inside your lungs. This continual exchange of gases helps maintain a constant supply of oxygen in your cells.

  7. How Breathing Works When you inhale, your diaphragm contracts and moves down. Your ribs move out and up, increasing the size of your chest cavity. Air moves through your nose and mouth and into your lungs. When you exhale, your diaphragm relaxes and moves up into your chest cavity. Your ribs move in and down, reducing the size of the chest cavity and forcing air out of your lungs.

  8. Problems of the Respiratory System • Problems of the respiratory system include the following: • Influenza and colds • Bronchitis • Allergies • Asthma • Pneumonia • Emphysema • Tuberculosis • Lung cancer

  9. Care of the Respiratory System • You can keep your respiratory system working at its peak by following some common sense practices. • Stay active. • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke. • Avoid polluted air. • Reduce your risk of respiratory infection.
