  1. Individual Honours A variety of people receive Honours for many different reasons such as impacting on society, their community or their organisation. Two Honours lists per year: Birthday and New Year Approximately 1,200 people are recognised in each list Announced in a blaze of publicity; headline news across the world. ANYONE CAN BE CONSIDERED AND ANYONE CAN MAKE A NOMINATION FOR AN HONOUR HONOURS ARE NOT JUST FOR CELEBRITIES!

The Prime Minister sets the strategic direction for each honours list • The Prime Minister would like to honour those who: • Create jobs and economic activity across the country; • Support a global, outward-looking Britain; • Support children and young people of all backgrounds to achieve their potential; • Aid social mobility, enhancing life opportunities and removing barriers to success; • Give their time to improve their local community; • Work to tackle discrimination in all its forms

  3. Who can be considered for an honour ? Anyone can be considered for an honour and anyone can make a nomination for an honour: We are looking for people who have made a significant contribution, gone above and beyond their recognised role, made a positive impact and delivered significant outcomes Youngest person to receive an honour – 13 year old school boy jonjo Heuerman – services to cancer research Oldest person to receive an honour - Fauja Singh 103 years old –services to sport and charity

People get honours for achievements for: • Making a difference to their community or field of work • Enhancing Britain’s reputation • Long-term voluntary service • Innovation and entrepreneurship • Changing things, with an emphasis on achievement • Improving life for people less able to help themselves • Displaying moral courage

Honours • A Knight or Dame candidate will have had a national impact • Someone receiving a CBE will have had a national impact, but to a lesser extent than someone who has been nominated for a Knighthood or Damehood • The recipient of an OBE will have had a regional impact • MBE recipients will be making an impact on a County level • People who are awarded a BEM (British Empire Medal) will have had an impact on their local community

The New Year Honours List 2019: • 1,148 people received an award: • 1018 at BEM, MBE and OBE level: 358 at BEM; 422 at MBE; 238 x OBE • 70% have undertaken outstanding work in their communities • 544 women; 47% of the total • 12% from a BAME background • 4% consider themselves to have a disability (under the Equality Act 2010) • 5% identify as being LGBT • West Midlands • 3 at CBE • 4 at OBE • 17 at MBE • 8 at BEM

What can you do ? • We can’t deliver a diverse Honours list without your help ! • Promote honours throughout the course of your activities • Identify people worthy of a honour and make or support a nomination • REMEMBER ! • ANYONE CAN BE CONSIDERED AND ANYONE CAN MAKE A NOMINATION FOR AN HONOUR

  8. Points to note about a nomination • Nominations often fail if the work happened too long ago. Look for examples of work and achievement form the last five years • Your candidate must still be doing what they have been nominated for six months before the Honours list is announced • At least 2 letters of support • The public nomination system is a lengthy process with at least an 18 month turn around time
