  1. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER! Further… Fall, 2011 George Carney Energy Manager San Gabriel Unified School District in Energyland

  2. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER! IN THE BEGINNING… …was the Idea. Simple in concept, powerful in application, transformational in effect! Our energy costs were rising, and utilities were the 2nd largest item in the General Fund budget, second only to personnel costs. Clearly, there was both a problem, and an opportunity. The District decided to act…

  3. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER! • We knew we could save significant amounts of money… • by significantly reducing our energy costs, • by reducing our energy consumption, • by changing attitudes and behavior. • Our first step was to choose a consultant to help us achieve our goal.

  4. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER! • After almost a year’s search, and much discussion, the District contracted with Energy Education Inc, in June 2007. • We selected Energy Education Inc. for several reasons… • They had a proven program that was self-funding.. • It required no investment in infrastructure or equipment… • Energy Education Inc. guaranteed the results, so the District assumed no risk… • And most important, the company specializes in public school districts, with its program in place in over 1000 districts nationwide, and more than a hundred in California.

  5. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER! THE WAY WE WERE… Our first step was to analyze our utility expenses. We looked at the school year September 2006 – August 2007. Here’s what we found: We used: We spent: WATER: 37,796 kGAL $74,413.10 GAS: 54,572 therms $58,306.30 ELECTRICITY: 5,590,515 kWh $1,052,203.43

  6. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER! • In the 2006-07 school year, then, we spent a total of $1,184,922 on energy costs. Because the great majority (88.8%) of our energy cost was our cost of electricity, we decided that this would be our first area of focus:

  7. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER …and here’s what happened: YearUsage in kWhCost • 2006-07(Base)5,905,515 $1,052,203.43 • 2007-08 4,473,422 803,060.53 • 2008-09 4,250,565 770,877.48 • 2009-103,865,306 633,411.50 • 2010- 11 3,591,030 582,526.64

  8. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER We have reduced our usage by 2,314,485 kWh, or 39.19%,…

  9. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER …and our annual cost by $469,677, or44.64%

  10. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • We’ve achieved similar results with our water and natural gas usage and expense…

  11. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • …Reducing our water usage by 34.86% • …And our natural gas usage by 33.87%

  12. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • We plan a closer look at our water usage habits, because water conservation is becoming more important as the price of water skyrockets, even as we continue to use less:

  13. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • …so even as utility prices have increased significantly, our lowered demand has more than offset these increases.

  14. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • Because the summer months were a particular area of concern, in 2010 the District began a new summer energy policy, going to a four-day workweek and greatly reducing activity on campus. Has this made a difference?

  15. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER …You be the judge:

  16. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • Taken all together, then, our Transformational Energy Management Program has produced overall cost avoidance of $1,094,274!

  17. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER Our efforts have been validated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which has awarded every one of our buildings and sites the EnergySTAR designation. While many districts have been awarded this honor for one or two sites, fewer than 1% of districts in the country have had all sites so honored.

  18. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • Our program produces significant other savings as well. A major part of our Energy Management program is the analysis of all of our energy bills each month, and the entering of our energy data into our Ecap Database. This, combined with regular interaction with our energy vendors, produces substantial savings:

  19. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • Early in 2008, we discovered that Southern California Edison was erroneously collecting Utility User Tax on several of our accounts. To date we have recovered $26,776.42 In 2009, we found three major Billing errors, totaling : $71,139.28

  20. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • In 2008, we became part of Southern California Edison’s Summer Discount Program. This produced savings of: 2008: $ 17,560.77 2009: 25,229.61 2010: 76,869.84 2011 (to date): 69,177.42$188,837.64 • In 2010, two of our sites were shifted to the new Critical Peak Pricing billing rate. Although this resulted in occasional shutdowns, it also earned us participation credits of: 2010 $34,888.14 2011 (to date): 23,992.28 $ 58,880.42

  21. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER …So in addition to the savings from our energy conservation program, we have saved an additional $345,633.76, due to careful monitoring and analysis of our energy bills. It is important to remember that these are direct cash credits, returned directly to the General Fund.

  22. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER The bottom line: • Between September 2007 and August 2011, as a result of the District’s Transformational Energy Management Program, San Gabriel Unified School District has saved a total of $ 345,633.76 (cash rebates) 1,094,276.79 (cost avoidance) $1,439,910.55

  23. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • Return on Investment – The District’s investment in our Energy Management Program has clearly already brought us a substantial return…

  24. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER …and will return much more in the years to come!

  25. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER What’s ahead… • In spring 2011, we began installing solar film on all south and west facing windows. We have completed phase one of this project (the DEC, Gabrielino and Jefferson), and hope to finish all schools sometime this year. The solar film reduces cooling costs 25% -30%. • We have completed our retrofit of the HVAC timers at all sites except GHS, changing them from 6 hour timers to 2 hours. This should result in significant consumption reduction and corresponding savings.

  26. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER • The Edison/Matrix project…this is a joint project of Southern California Edison and the California Public Utilities Commission. This program will provide the District with $150,000 in retrofit of lights and lighting controls at no cost to us, which will result in a consumption reduction of 425,000 kilowatt hours and a corresponding savings (at current rates) of approximately $85,000/year. We have completed the audit phase, and are midway through the initial site surveys. We anticipate all work being completed during the current school year

  27. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER Most importantly, though… • We’ve begun a long-lasting, even permanent, change in behavior and habits that will not only save the District substantial amounts of money that can be better spent on the children of San Gabriel… • We’ve also made a modest contribution toward making those children’s future brighter, because every dollar we save and every kilowatt we don’t use has an impact on the environment they live in:

  28. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER Based on figures provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the energy reduction in our District equals • 25,760 MMBTU, or 2,476 metric tons of CO2 NOT emitted into the atmosphere… • 446 cars NOT driven for one year • 63,614trees planted and grown for ten years…

  29. SGUSD Transformational Energy Management…Making SGUSD GREENER …and that is the real and lasting value of SGUSD’s Transformational Energy Management Program – a GREENER world for our kids to grow up in! Questions?
