  2. Wu Xing 五行- Five Phases (Elements) • Universe has five elements • Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, Wood. • They mutually generate and constrain. • Xing = Phases • Denotes movement of energies

  4. Ying and Yang, Five Elements (Phases) are used to explain many things. • Chinese medicine used this theory to diagnose and cure diseases • Ying Yang theory is binary. It is said that computer digital algorism 0-1 is based on this Yin and Yang theory.

The I-Ching“Book of Changes” • Ancient divination technique (at least 3000 years old) • Intended to guide humans in decision making • Based on combinations of lines representing the ever changing relationship between passive (yin) and active (yang) energy flow of heaven, human, and earth = yin = yang

  6. Using the I-Ching Tool • Symbolism of the lines (yao 爻): • Undivided line – Yang • Divided line – Yin • Trigram: Qian 乾 Kun 坤 • Three lines make a trigram • Two trigrams make a hexagram (gua 卦) • The total number of hexagram is 64

Example: hexagram #31 • Find the hexagram by lines 669996 (the divided line is 6, the undivided line is 9, count from bottom) • It is the HSIEN HEXAGRAM 咸卦 （influence) (from http://www.cfcl.com/ching/) • Keyword(s):InfluenceSymbolic of: something heartfelt • Hsien indicates that, (on the fulfillment of the conditions implied in it), there will be free course and success. Its advantageousness will depend on the being firm and correct, (as) in marrying a young lady. There will be good fortune.

  9. Explanation of the separate lines • The first six, divided, shows one moving his great toes. • The second SIX, divided, shows one moving the calves of his leg. There will be evil. If he abide (quiet in his place), there will be good fortune. • The third NINE, undivided, shows one moving his thighs, and keeping close hold of those whom he follows. Going forward (in this way) will cause regret. • The fourth NINE, undivided, shows that firm correctness whi.ch will lead to good fortune, and prevent all occasion for repentance. If its subject be unsettled in his movements, (only) his friends will follow his purpose. • The fifth NINE, undivided, shows one moving the flesh along the spine above the heart. There will be no occasion for repentance. • The sixth six, divided, shows one moving his jaws and tongue.

  10. How to get a hexagram • Use coins or sticks to get a hexagram • Toss the coins six times • Record the combination each time, the first toss appearance at the bottom
