  1. Totalitarianism A system of government in which all political, economic, social, cultural and religious activity is controlled by the rulers of the state. Type of autocracy that was able to flourish in the mid 20th Century. (Russia- Joseph Stalin, Germany- Adolph Hitler, Italy- Benito Mussolini, and China- Mao Zedong.) ** Key Ingredient _ timing for such leaders to rise

  2. Characteristics of Totalitarianism Dictatorship with 1 Political Party Only 1 viewpoint is tolerated. All who work for the dictator must agree with any and all decisions. Police State exists  Military is controlled by dictator. Secret Police used violence and intimidation to control the people and suppress any opposition. Media (Newspapers, magazines, books, Radio, TV) is controlled by Government/Dictator. All biased information as to what the dictator wants published.

  3. Characteristics Continued • State run Schools demand Conformity it is demanded at the will of dictator. Opinions are not honored. • Propaganda is used to create a sense of Nationalism extreme patriotism is played up and glorifies the goals and of the nation. Glorification of war is promoted and seen as honorable. • The state controls the economy as its success is dependant on their economic success.
