  2. Hadith • “For every Ummah there is a temptation, and the temptation of my Ummah is wealth.”

  3. Surah Al-Taghabun, Ayat 15 • "Your wealth and your children are only a trial (fitnah). And Allah - With Him is a great reward (Paradise).“ • "And know that your possessions and your children are but a trial (fitnah) and that surely with Allah is a mighty reward." [Surah al-Anfal, 28]

  4. Hadith • “A son of Adam becomes old but two things in him become young: greed for wealth and greed for more life.”

  5. Hadith • "If a son of Adam were to own a valley full of gold, he would desire to have two. Nothing can fill his mouth except the earth (of the grave). Allah turns with mercy to him who turns to Him in repentance".

  6. Hadith • “Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth but looks at your heart and actions.”

  7. Hadith • “What is little but sufficient is better than that which is abundant but causes heedlessness.”

  8. Hadith • “Look to those lower than you, and do not look to those above you, lest you view the favors of Allah (upon you) as trivial.”

  9. Hadith • "I don't fear poverty for you, but rather I fear that you will compete with one another (to see who has more possessions).”

  10. What are things we compete for? • Bigger house/mansions • More prestigious suburb • More expensive car • Nice clothes/shoes/purse • More pay/salary • Higher position/status • Advanced degrees • Islamic knowledge • Better Masjid

  11. Hadith • "Two hungry wolves, if let loose amongst a flock of sheep, cause less harm than a man's eagerness to increase his money and his prestige."

  12. Surah Taubah, Ayat 35 • On the Day when the money, gold and silver which you hoarded will be heated in the Fire of Hell and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, (and it will be said unto them): "This is the treasure which you hoarded for yourselves. Now taste of what you used to hoard."

  13. Hadith • "Three things destroy, and three things save. As for the three things that destroy, they are: greediness that is obeyed, and desires that are followed, and a person becoming self-conceited (and proud) with himself. As for the three things that save, they are: the fear of Allah in secret and public, and moderation in poverty and richness, and fairness in anger and pleasure."

  14. Needs vs. Wants • Need shelter • Need car • Need clothes • Need food • You must decide what is your “need” for each one of these things • Is a fancy, luxury car you need or your desire?

  15. Surah Baqarah, Ayat 219 • The companions asked the Prophet (S) how much they should give in charity • They ask you (O Muhammad)what they ought to spend. Say: "That which is beyond your needs."

  16. Needs vs. Wants • Allah (SWT) doesn’t give a number or an amount. • He simply says give away that which is beyond your needs. • He does not define what is you need • That is up to you to decide • Each individual person must decide what is their need and what is beyond their need.

  17. Needs vs. Wants • On the Day of Judgment Allah (SWT) will let us know if we made the right choice and considered something a need or a desire.

  18. Quote • "If you want to feel rich, just count all of the things you have that money can't buy.“ • Name some of these things

  19. Quote • “Money can’t buy happiness” • We think buying things will make us happy • So many people with money are depressed (Hollywood stars) • Money can’t buy piece of mind • Money can’t buy contentment

  20. Hadith • “Richness does not come from an abundance of wealth; true richness is richness of the heart.”

  22. Quote • “Money can’t buy happiness” • We think buying things will make us happy • So many people with money are depressed (Hollywood stars) • Money can’t buy piece of mind • Money can’t buy contentment

  23. Hadith • “Richness does not come from an abundance of wealth; true richness is richness of the heart.”

  24. Nourishing our Nafs • Material things we buy only feeds and nourishes our Nafs/body • Car • House • Clothes • Exotic foods • I-Phone, I-Pad, X-Box • These things give us temporary happiness

  25. Nourishing our Souls • We need to feed and nourish our soul/spirit • Prayer • Fasting • Zakat/Sadaqah • Hajj • These things give us happiness/ contentment in our heart, which is much more permanent

  26. Surah Fajr, Ayats 27 – 30 • (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the soul (Nafs) who is content and in satisfaction! Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! Enter you, then, among My honored slaves, and enter you into My Paradise!"

  27. Hadith • "The two feet of the son of Adam will not move on the Day of Judgement in front of his Lord until he is asked about five things: about his life, and how he spent it? And about his youth, what did he consume it in? And about his money, how did he earn it? And what did he spend it on? And how much did he act upon what he knew?"

  28. Hadith • "The plentiful (i.e., the rich) will be the lowest on the Day of Judgement, except he who distributed his money left and right (i.e., at all times), while he earned from pure (means)."

  29. Hadith • “A servant says: My wealth, my wealth. But out of his wealth three things are only his: (1) Whatever he eats and makes use of or (2) By means of which he dresses himself and it wears out or (3) He gives as charity, and this is what he stored for himself (as a reward for the Hereafter). What is beyond this (it is of no use to you) because you are to depart and leave it for other people.”

  30. Hadith • “Three things follow the bier of a dead man; two of them come back and one is left with him: (1) the members of his family (2) wealth and (3) his good deeds. The members of his family and wealth come back and the deeds alone are left with him.”

  31. Hadith • "Everyday two angels descend and one of them says, `O Allah! Compensate (more) to the person who gives (in charity)'; while the other one says, `O Allah! Destroy the one who withholds (charity, etc.)"

  32. Hadith • "O son of Adam! It is better for you to spend what is in excess of your needs and worse for you to keep it. You will not be blamed for (keeping) enough to cover your needs. Begin with your immediate dependents. The upper hand is better than the lower hand."

  33. Hadith • 'A'isha reported that they sacrificed a sheep and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "How much of it is left?" She said, "All that remains of it is its shoulder." He said, "On the contrary, all of it remains except its shoulder."

  34. Hadith • "Give Sadaqah without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity." (Tirmidhi)

  35. Hadith • Sadaqah is like an umbrella that protects you from the shower of difficulties.

  36. Hadith • “Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth; and the servant who forgives, Allah adds to his respect; and the one who shows humility, Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).”

  37. Hadith • “Sadaqah extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.”

  38. Retirement Fund • Invest in the future • Diversify your portfolio

  39. Akhirah Fund • Invest in the future • By giving Sadaqah • Diversify your portfolio • Donate to a masjid or islamic school • Feed the poor • Sponsor an orphan • Donate to relief organizations • Sponsor a hafiz
