Who are we? • The Tenerife Energy Agency (AIET) was constituted on July 26th, 2005, within the frame of the "IEE program” together with the islands of Samsø (Denmark) and Iceland. • Main target: coordinate and collaborate with the different Administrations, local authorities and key actors, to promote the rational use of Energy (energy saving + energy efficiency) and the use of Renewable Energies.

  4. Tenerife’s main characteristics • the largest of the 7 Canary Islands • Outermost region of the EU • Area: 2.034 km2 • Population: 899.833 • Tourists: 4.707.782/year

  5. Tenerife’s geographical information • Volcanic island • Wide variety of microclimates and landscapes due to its orography and trade winds. • Average temperatures: • 17º-18ºC in winter • 24º-25ºC in summer.

  6. Energy situation in Tenerife • Isolated Electric grid • Scarce endogenous energy sources: • 7,27% Renewable energies • Energy consumption: 3.277.011 MWh • Energy consumed by families is about 30% of the total energy consumption of the archipelago. • Average energy consumption per household: 3.992 kWh.

  7. EASW workshops • Celebrated in May 2012 • Participation of 20 persons representing the following groups: A) Consumers B) Energy Sector C) Education Sector D) Public Sector • Best approach for the awareness campaign in Tenerife.

Conclusions of the EASW workshops • The home energy checks would be the best way to interact with the population and get real changes in behaviour • Increase the number of energy checks • Big advertisement billboards and the radio: most effective dissemination platforms in Tenerife • Involve local mediators and community leaders These conclusions helped in the definition of the final ACTION PLAN that is being carried out in Tenerife.

  10. Target group The awareness raising campaign includes all households in the island: • Number of households: 306.328 households • Main characteristics: • Average size of the households: 3,24 persons • 22% of its households are integrated by only one member and • 67% are nuclear families.

  11. 1. Home energy checks • Started in February 2012 and will continue until the end of the project. • Key action of the Tenerife Awareness campaign • Most requested tool of the PROMISE project • First 5 were led by Samsø and were used as training sessions for AIET. • Based on check list elaborated by Samsø and adapted to the local context.

  12. Multiplying the effect of the Home energy checks • Agreement with the educational program of the local government “Personas mas Sostenibles“ to execute home energy checks in associations. Who does it work? • Energy check in the house of a chosen representative of an association. • Commitment to perform at least 10 more energy checks among the members of the association. • Training session for the representative . • Report with the final savings.

  13. The members of the association receive: • information about PROMISE • general energy saving info • a package with eco-friendly gadgets.

  14. HOME ENERGY CHECKS RESULTS • Total Number of home energy checks : 13 • Primary energy savings: 12.502kwh/year • AIET has carried out the 37% of the energy checks planned. • Percentage saved per house: 20 - 50% of the consumption.

App development • Free tool for smartphones users that want to save energy at home. • APP based on the energy checks sheet developed by Samsø. • Self energy check that can be updated with future energy savings. • Results can be shared with AIET. • Developed for Android smartphones and available in Spanish in the Google Play Store. • Launched in November during the Info Day.

  16. Performance Indicators • Number of Eco-Calc Downloads: 162 • Rating average by the users: 4.8/5 Conclusions • The Eco-Calc app has been very well received among the population. Due to its great potential, AIET must concentrate in making more efforts for its promotion to get more users.

  17. 3. Energy saving Info day What? PROMISE dissemination event Where? City center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (capital) When? November 30th, 2012 Why? to inform about the project, provide personal advice and information on energy saving and efficiency in homes and launch the application for smartphones “Eco-Calc”.

Implementation obstacle • AIET attended several meetings to participate and organize together with other associations and local actors an important event aimed at households regarding energy savings. • Cancelation due to lack of budget of the other participants for the year 2012. (AIET is making efforts to try and organize this event in the year 2013. Solution • Organization of our own Info Day. • AIET achieved a collaboration agreement with the “Sociedad de desarrollo” (Development Society of the City Council) to promote all the activities regarding the PROMISE project and to act as a mediator between the City Council and AIET: Free previous dissemination of the event Free establishment of a stand and information booth in the city center. Free wifi access during the event

  19. PROMISE stand was available for 8 hours: • 9:00h-13:00h • 15:00h – 19:00h • 4 “workshops” programmed • Number of attendees: 100 • EoIs for energy checks: 11 • PROMISE info pack distributed (5 different brochures): 200 • Live interview during the event

Media dissemination and other “Sustainable Tenerife” TV program • Local TV station • March - May 2012 (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) • PROMISE advices with energy saving tips: • explanation of the advices • Energy savings expressed in kWh, kg CO2 and € • Also available on the Youtube channel of the program • Audience of the TV station: 157.000 viewers • YouTube views: 1.254

  21. Planeta Vivo Radio program • focused on environmental issues • broadcasted by RNE (National Radio Station) • One program fully dedicated to PROMISE • PROMISE advices section created • Audience of the Planeta Vivo Radio program: 103.000 daily listeners

COPE radio • Interview in the “Las mañanas de Tenerife” program • Radio spots and PROMISE advices recorded for the promotion of the project • Number of broadcasts of radio spots: 358 • Number of broadcasts of the PROMISE Advices: 120 • Audience of the COPE in Tenerife: 85.0000 daily listeners.

  23. Other ways of dissemination: European Solar Days • Collaboration with National Association of the Solar Thermal Industry in the celebration of the Solar Days in Spain. • AIET organized guided visits to ITER´s Bioclimatic houses • visitors learned about how a very efficient house works and how to acquire more energy efficient habits through the PROMISE Advices.

  24. Conclusions Most of the media dissemination efforts have been focused in the Radio now that is one of the most effective dissemination platforms in Tenerife. Nonetheless AIET has also contacted TV and press to cover all the dissemination media and therefore increase the visibility of the project.
