Florida’s Agriculture By the Numbers, 2013 (FL DOACS) • “Florida’s 47,500 farms produce nearly 300 different commodities on more than 9 million acres…employs 2 million people and contributes more than $104 billion to our state’s economy each year.”In contrast tourism brings “economic impact of $67 billion on Florida’s economy” (Florida Dept of Revenue 2013).

  4. WRONG: $104 vs $67 Billion X Why didn’t I know that agriculture was such a huge industry in Florida?

Overview Into the Fields is a new Global Learning class taught by the Center for Labor Research and Studies (CLRS) which brings FIU students to Homestead and Florida City to learn and collaborate on community research and planning. This is a small class of students we are calling “Into the Fields Scholars.”

  6. The overarching research question “What are the health concerns of agricultural workers in Homestead, Florida?” * *upon consultation with the community, we may further define the question to be more specific related to one area or another.

  7. Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) - Duke • Materials developed by Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) a 20 year- old organization based in North Carolina (Duke University) dedicated to training students to understand and actively work in support of farmworkers. • www.saf-unite.org • I would like to bring them to FIU!

  9. The Place: Homestead Florida Population: 63,190; 34% Foreign Born 62.9% Hispanic/Latino, (US Census 2013). Context: Devastated by Hurricane Andrew in August, 1992 Rebuilt, but suffers from uneven development, especially in terms of housing of agricultural workers.

Global Learning Goals Into the Fields aligns with the FIU Strategic Plan on Health in the following areas:  • Enhance both the amount and visibility of health-related research. • Increase involvement of students, faculty and staff in community engagement focused on health needs. • Strengthen partnerships with local and global community and governmental agencies, public entities, hospitals, and health care and social service agencies/providers.   • Develop training opportunities in health for local and international professionals.

Goals as we communicate to the community partners • Establish a partnership between FIU and Homestead (and Florida City) • Engage community members, organizations, churches from the beginning • Teach participatory research methods and enable students to utilize them in the field • Produce a report on the pilot that is useful to partners (organizations, leaders, etc)

  12. Cultural Characteristics of Migration=vulnerability • Students will learn about migration and farm labor through assigned readings, key stakeholder interviews and participant observation • Migration patterns-sending countries: • Guatemala • Mexico • Central America • Haiti

  13. 1) on campus learning; 2) field research and 3) giving and reporting back. Phase I: our students will learn research methods and read important background information on farm labor, nurseries, cultural studies and health issues (IRB Certificate) Phase II: Travel to Homestead/Florida City a total of 5 Phase III: Data Entry, Analysis and Write up Plan: 3 Phases

Progress to Date We have visited Homestead 3-4 times and made in-roads with community organizations regarding “Into the Fields” – very positive responses We are sending out “Information Sheets” to our Contacts to start setting up interviews with students during Summer A We now have to sign up the Into the Fields Scholars for LBS 4930
