Mission • To educate individuals with the global understanding necessary to address the challenges of our interdependent world. • Background • Established in 1963 • Only shipboard study abroad program of its kind in the world • Operated by the nonprofit Institute for Shipboard Education • University of Virginia is the academic sponsor • 107 voyages and counting • Alumni: more than 55,000 from 1,500 institutions

MV Explorer • Passenger ship outfitted as a floating college campus • 590-feet, 7 decks, 25,000 tons • Exemplary safety and health ratings • Amenities and resources: • 9 state-of-the-art classrooms • Union • 9,000-volume library • Wireless Internet • Computer lab • Recreational facilities • 2 dining rooms • Outdoor pool • Fitness center • Sports court • Wellness center • Medical clinic

Programs • Undergraduate • 600-700 each term representing more than 280 institutions • Receive transferable course credit from U.Va. • Participate in field excursions and independent travel • Lifelong Learning • Adults age 40+ • Generally 10% of voyage population • Can audit SAS courses and participate in field program • Enrichment Voyages (non-credit) • Based on SAS model • 14-21 day educational voyages to 8-12 destinations

SAS Voyages • Fall and Spring • 100-110 days • 10-12 international destinations • Traverse the Panama Canal or Amazon Basin • 12-15 transferable credits • Summer voyages • 65-70 days: • Focus on Europe and North Africa • 8 international destinations • 9-12 transferable credits • Short-term voyages • 20-25 days • Interdisciplinary examination of a central theme • 6-8 international destinations • 4-5 transferable credits
