  1. The Pelvic Girdle INTRODUCTION TO THE SKELETAL SYSTEM

  2. Histology of Bone Tissue Bone Function and Structure Bone Growth & Development Joints The Axial Skeleton The Pectoral Girdle The Upper Limbs The Pelvic Girdle The Lower Limbs oVERVIEW

  3. 22 bones in skull 6 in middle ears 1 hyoid bone 26 in vertebral column 25 in thoracic cage 4 in pectoral girdle 60 in upper limbs 2 in pelvic girdle 60 in lower limbs 206 bones in all Some Numbers…

  4. The Appendicular Skeleton

  5. Structures: • Pelvic bones • 1 pair of bones • 2 total • Each pelvic bone in babies: 3 separate bones • Illium • Ischium • Pubis • Fuse together during childhood The Pelvic Girdle

  6. Functions: Simple but important • Protects reproductive organs • Bears weight of upper part of body • Attachment sites for muscles • Note: The Pectoral Girdle has much more flexibility than the Pelvic Girdle due to its location: the Pectoral Girdle is at the top of the vertebra, so it does not have to hold nearly as much weight as the Pelvic Girdle, which is at the bottom of vertebra (and must also protect the reproductive organs). The Pelvic Girdle

  7. Joints of the Pelvic Girdle: • Only point of connection to axial skeletal system: • Joint between Illiumpart of Pelvic Bones with Sacrum • Other parts of Pelvic Girdle are connected to muscles • Joints (3): • Immovable joints between sacrum and pelvic bones (sacroilliac joint) • Immovable joint between pubis sections of pelvic bones (pubic symphysis) • Ball-and-socket type joint between lowerlimb and pelvis at obturator foramen The Pelvic Girdle

  8. Pelvis (lateral view) Ilium Acetabulum Obturator foramen Pubis Ischium Ischium

  9. The Pelvic Girdle

  10. Example of “Form follows Function”: • Process of giving birth requires that pubic arch must be much wider for women than men. Male vs. Female Pelvis Female Pelvic Girdle Male Pelvic Girdle
