Culture Iceberg • The upper part is relatively easy to observe(10%). • It is the hidden part of culture that causes us the most problems when we try to work with someone from another culture (90% lies below the surface). • Values and beliefs are the core of our decision-making process.   14. Who Do You Save? • For the Asians: • Tradition value (age above 40) • save the mother • Reason: • My mother is the one who took care of me. Who Do You Save? • This is a terrible dilemma. • Almost everyone, regardless of cultural differences, would like to save all three. • The critical issue is how do you choose, if you can only choose one.   19. Culture Generalization • It is obvious that everyone from the same culture doesn’t think or act in the same way. • This is because culture is just one of the many influences that make up any individual. 2006 PAX/ Angela Shin-yih Chen

Culture Generalization Each of us is influenced by at least 3 major factors: 1. biological influences：genetic factors 2. individual factors：personality traits or life experience 3. group membership：vary Person=F(biological influences, individual factors, group membership) 2006 PAX/ Angela Shin-yih Chen

Culture Generalization • Above example illustrates why people from the same culture can be very different, yet at the same time show a number of important similarities. • Cultural generalizations are starting points for understanding others. • We can generalize about culture, and have to when working with people from other countries. • Yet, we need to be very careful not to assume that everyone will fit the generalization. 2006 PAX/ Angela Shin-yih Chen
