Academic Culture • Goal is for every student to learn, graduate and be prepared for life after high school. • Students advocate for themselves by talking to teachers, coaches, and administrators. • Students should expect homework. • Grades are available online. • Web pages are available with assignments and work.

  8. Challenge Yourself • This is your education…no one else's. • When things seem hard look at it as a challenge. Do your best and learn from it. • Everyone fails at something sometime. How you handle it now will set the stage for how you handle adversity later in life.

  11. Graduation Requirements • Students in high school earn credits. • For each year-long course in which students earn a passing grade and meet the attendance criteria, students will receive 1 full credit (1/2 credit per semester course).

  12. Graduation Requirements • Students take 6 courses a year. • Students can earn 6 credits per year. • Students must earn 22 out of the 24 possible credits to graduate.

Scheduling Process • Students requested courses in March • Students receive a four year course plan to aid them • 8th grade teachers will make math recommendation in June • 8th grade teachers will confirm social studies placement in June • Final schedules will be picked up in August the week before school starts

  29. WHY PLAY SPORTS? • Opportunities for everyone! (70%+) • IT’S FUN! • Skills not learned in a classroom environment. • Looks good on College/Job Applications. • Memories that last a lifetime. IT’S FUN! • Athletes have classroom success!

  30. AT BRIDGMAN… • 73% of the Honor Roll = Athlete (2013) • 89% of the National Honor Society = Athlete • 27% of our athletes last year earned a Varsity Letter AND had a 3.5 GPA (18% of our school) • 60% of our athletes have over a 3.0 GPA • 13 out of 14 cumulative 4.0 students are Athletes

  31. THE “S” WORD SPECIALIZATION • Specialization can make sports NOT fun and can result in over use injuries • Tom Izzo & Nick Saban prefer multi-sport athletes • Jewel Loyd and Tim Tebow

SPECIALIZATION Many coaches think sport specialization actually hinders athletic development, and that kids would increase their athletic skills more rapidly by sampling several different sports throughout the year. The thinking around playing multiple sports is that different sports develop different skills, muscles, abilities, and even mindsets – all leading the student-athlete to become a better and more complete competitor.

  34. ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY • Marking Period – 2.0 GPA, 1 or less “F” If ineligible, you can practice, but no competition for 21 calendar days. RECHECK • MHSAA Eligibility SEMESTER GRADES • 9th Graders get a clean slate!
