5. IEEE Standards Education Mission • Promote the importance of standards in meeting technical, economic, environmental, and societal challenges. • Secure and disseminate learning materials on the application of standards in the design and development aspects of educational programs. • Secure and provide short courses about standards needed in the design and development phases of professional practice. • Actively promote the integration of standards into academic programs.

6. Standards Education Community

7. Importance of Standards Education • Standards education recognizes the key role standards play within the engineering, technology and computing fields. • Knowledge of standards can help facilitate the transition from classroom to professional practice by aligning educational concepts with real-world applications. • Facilitate Communication • Uniformity for Professional Tasks • Foundation/Framework for Innovation • Product Quality and Interoperability

8. IEEE Standards Education Program Highlights • IEEE Standards Education Web Portal • IEEE Standards Education Grants • IEEE Standards Education e-Magazine (eZine) • Developing products/services for university students and professors and continuing education for practitioners

9. Incorporating Standards into Engineering Curriculum • Exposes students to how an industry segment operates in certain technologies. • Students acquire skills necessary to enter workforce • Benefits students and faculty mentors as they face challenging design processes. • Common grounds for discussion • Prepares students for applied research. • Avoids wasting time on inventing/re-building “reusable” technology • Provides tools for use in learning about standards and their impact on design and development • Going beyond theory
