Marching Toward War • Nationalism • Deep devotion to one’s nation • Caused intense competition among Europe’s Great Powers for industrial dominance and power • Imperialism • Quest for colonies • Intensified rivalry and mistrust among Euro nations as they competed for colonies in Asia and Africa • Militarism • Policy of glorifying military power and being prepared for war • Led to an arms race, large standing armies, and alliances

Marching Toward War • Triple Alliance • Agreement created by Bismarck making Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy allies • Created an unstable alliance that tried to isolate France • Triple Entente • Alliance among Britain, France, and Russia in which Britain promised not to fight France and Russia • Established two rival camps (Triple Alliance & Triple Entente) that created the possibility that any dispute between two rival powers could draw the entire continent into war • Assassination in Sarajevo • A Serbian nationalist murders Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife • Provided Austria-Hungary with an excuse to launch war on Serbia, leading to a confrontation between Austria and Russia

DO NOT BE A BITER!!! USE YOUR OWN WORDS!!! • You will have 30 minutes to complete this activity
