This guide explores the concept of quantum numbers, four essential values that define an electron's position and behavior within an atom. Quantum numbers determine the energy level (Principal Quantum Number, n), shape (Angular Momentum Quantum Number, l), orientation (Magnetic Quantum Number, m), and spin (Spin Quantum Number, s) of electrons. Mastering these numbers is critical for understanding atomic structure and behavior in quantum mechanics. Learn how they establish the "address" of an electron within an atom and their importance in solving the Schrödinger equation.

What is a Quantum #? • A Quantum number are four numbers that find the location of an electron (an address of an atom) • The book definition- Q# specify the properties of atomic orbital that is indicated by solving the Shrodinger equation
The Quantum numbers • The four Quantum Numbers are • Principal Quantum # (n) • Angular Momentum Quantum # (l) • Magnetic Quantum # (m) • Spin Quantum # (s)
Principal Quantum # • The number indicates the main energy level occupied by the electron. • In other words locates which shell an electron is in • Principal Quantum # are always positive integers.
Angular momentum Quantum # • Indicates the shape of the orbital • Or which orbital the electron is in • AMQ# are 0,1,2,3 • An orbital is the path an electron takes (sublevel) • Each orbital holds 2 electron
Magnetic Quantum # • Indicates the orientation of an orbital around the nucleus • Or which dimension of orbital an electron is located • MQ# is -l to +l (all whole numbers in between + 0) • Is if l is 0, m is 0 if l is 1, m is 3
Spin Quantum # • The two fundamental spin states of an electron in an orbital • Or which spin (direction) an electron is going • S is ½ or -½
