  1. FLAT WIND MILL A New Technology in Wind Power Generation INNOVATION BY SURESH CHAWLA www.sureshchawla.com

  2. FLAT WIND MILL • TOTAL TURN AROUND IN WIND TECHNOLOGY • CHANCE FOR THE WORLD TO HAVE MAXIMUM UTILISATION OF WIND POWER • CLEAN ENERGY

  3. FLAT WIND MILL PATENT The patent office has granted Patent to us for this new kind of Wind Mill developed

  4. PRESENT SCENARIO OF ENERGY GENERATION FROM WIND • In majority of wind farms around the world,a normal rotor of wind mill of 16 m (50ft) radius provided at 30 meter(100ft) height exposed to wind at 40 km/hr average wind speed produces 0.5 MW • The maximum energy that can be and is being generated in each wind mill at present is 5 MW • Very few wind mills can be set up for each sq km. of wind farm i.e. each wind mill requires lot of space around each wind mill and normal distance between two wind mills ranges between 300 meters to half a km in all directions to avoid diversion of wind from one wind mill to the other one, which means that very few wind mills can be set up in any wind farm

  5. PROPOSED SCENARIO OF ENERGY GENERATION FROM WIND • If we are able to provide and expose wider and higher rotors to wind, we can produce much higher energy from same wind farms. • With only 30 M x 30 M rotor for each wind mill of our new generation wind mill, we can produce 63 MW (Which will be very normal size of rotor for our technology) • With 1 Km x1 km rotor for each wind mill of our new generation wind mill we can generate 700 MW • With 10 km x10 km rotor we can produce energy to the tune of 70,000 MW

  6. WIND POWERAN UNUTITISED SECTOR • It is astonishing that even after so much of innovation in wind technology, the traditional wind mills are still ruling the scene, though there are many difficulties. • Still the harvesting of wind to its full potential is a far cry.

  7. History of Windmills Windmills have been around for a very long time. The first windmills were used to grind grain and then to pump water. Today they are also used to make electricity. These windmills are called wind turbines. The first windmills were invented in Persia around 600 A.D. to grind grain. Built like a merry-go-round with the blades standing up around a vertical shaft, they looked very much like a water wheel turned on end. The problem was that without the wind hitting only one side of the windmill, it would not spin. To direct the wind to only one side, walls were built around the windmill with a slot-shaped opening on one side. The Chinese discovered that if you set the blades at an angle to the shaft, the mill would spin continually without the walls around it.

  8. History of Windmills By the 1100s, windmills had spread throughout Europe. About this time, it was discovered that windmills had more power when the sails or blades turned on a horizontal shaft, like the great Dutch windmills that used four blades and could pump large amounts of water. Over time, windmills began to be built bigger and became more ornate. In fact, some even became homes for the millers who owned and worked in them. During the 1970s, shortages of oil for generating electricity led to interest and research in wind power. By the early 1980s, advances in technology had made it possible for wind turbines to produce large amounts of electricity. Some states, like New York and California, installed thousands of the new wind turbines, which are still in use. Windmills are perhaps one of the future answers to generating electricity.

  9. OUR INVENTION • Our invention is a new kind of wind mills pertaining to utilizing maximum potential of wind energy by providing and exposing huge surfaces of Rotors in place of present kind of Rotors • Our invention not only can provide huge surfaces to face wind but can be set up in rows and columns to utilize maximum wind energy • The first row of wind mills in a wind farm can be of varied heights. Suppose the first row has height 10 M, the second row of wind mills can be of height 20M the third row of wind mills can be of height 40 M the fourth row can be of height 80M and so on . The length of wind mills can extend to the entire width of any wind farm

  10. OUR INVENTION • The reason for increasing the heights of the wind mills in subsequent rows is to allow the wind to act on each wind mill individually and not to allow the wind emanating from the wind mills in the previous rows to react on the wind mills in subsequent rows. It is there fore necessary to keep the heights of the wind mills in the subsequent rows to be higher than the wind mills in the front rows. • The procedure provided above will provide full utilization of wind energy available in any wind farm which is not possible with present technology by staggering the wind mills over a large area of any wind farm. The out put of energy by adopting new system will enhance by several times the out put at present.

  11. OUR REQUIREMENT STEP 1 • It is not difficult today to see the working of any new system by simulation in computer but we created a working system and carried out tests and trial successfully at chalkewadi wind farm situated near Satara city in Maharashtra, India to have initial trial. It did work satisfactorily . • It generated a lot of curiosity among the representatives of other wind generation companies who have their wind mills working in that wind farm. Looking at the situation, we immediately removed the system to first obtain the patent. Having achieved the objective now we can move ahead. STEP 2 • We can now straight away go in for new generation wind mills.

  12. STRUCTURE At present rotors are mounted on shaft. And rest of equipment pertain to controls And generation of energy equipment is also mounted behind the rotors. At the height of rotors It is not practical to look after every aspect of present wind mills at that height So all automatic control systems are required Which result in higher costs

  13. COST COMPARISON • THE COSTS PER MW FOR PRESENT TECHNOLOGY COMES TO ABOUT Rs 6 CR OR US$ 1.5 MILLION • OUR TECHNOLOGY DOES NOT HAVE ROTORS AT ALL AND THE STRUCTURE IS MUCH STABLE BEING MULTIPLE COLUMN BASED AND GROUND BASED RATHER THAN SINGLE COLUMN HOLDING EVERY THING • COST WISE OUR SYSTEM WILL BE MORE ECONOMICAL
