Why use e-Learning in ESR? • Encourages cultural change as learners have more responsibility for managing their education • Blended learning offers learners flexibility of choice; and any learning completed will automatically update the employee record • Development of computer skills that are transferable to other areas of learner's lives both personally and professionally • Reduced training time; e-Learning can be quicker than attending a days training to cover the same topic

  5. Why use e-Learning in ESR? • Helps improve Trust compliance with statutory training requirements for the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and NHS Litigation Authority • Improves access to professional training, for example End of Life Care, Radiography, Audiology, Blood Transfusion, Information Governance • Pressures on training resources i.e. limited rooms and trainers makes eLearning an essential option • Delivers efficiency and effectiveness benefits (cash and non-cash releasing) • Able to assess knowledge retention

  6. Benefits for Learners • Improves access to professional training, for example End of Life Care, Radiography, Audiology, Blood Transfusion, Information Governance • Develops computer skills that are transferable to other areas of learner's lives • Gives learners more options to complete essential training • Enables access to learning for staff who work non-core hours • Appeals to a range of learning styles

  7. Efficiency Benefits Examples…

  8. Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust During the 2nd evaluation of OLM eLearning covering two courses, IG and Infection Control the Trust recognised the following benefits: • Potential cost savings of over £100,000 if a 90% compliance rate was achieved over the two subjects if delivered solely by eLearning. The Trust has c.2400 employees. • e-Learning delivered a slightly more favourable knowledge retention rate than face to face training • Feedback from subject matter leads and staff had significantly improved with staff achieving higher compliance rates • Over time technical issues reported by staff decreased by 30% despite a dramatic increase in system use

  9. Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust • Safeguarding Children Level 1 completions in total 3568 (1808 through eLearning, 1760 by face to face). The results are as follows: • Average Time for eLearning (allowing 15 minutes to log on) = 49 minutes • Average Time for 1 hour face to face (allowing 45mins to travel) = 105 minutes • This freed up 1687 hours (70 days) of time over the period of the project (2 months) which would otherwise have been spent away from service delivery
