  1. Family History (Hist 466/566)Interim Session, Summer 2005In-class meetings: May 17, 24, 26 and 31. Battlefield tour June 3-5. Approximately 620,000 men (two percent of the nation’s population) died in the Civil War. The war tore families apart and shattered the social fabric of the nation. We will look at how families dealt with the cataclysm of the war, discuss the basics of uncovering family lineage in Civil War era documents, and travel to the battlefields at Vicksburg and Shiloh. There are 4 in-class meetings (from 6-9pm) and two weekend activities. This is an ideal course for anyone interested in the Civil War or improving their abilities at tracing family history. The format of the course is also well adapted to those students with busy schedules. Permission of instructor is required and class space is limited so please contact Dr. Benac as soon as possible.
