Heading – Debating 3 Write 2-3 sentences on what you think about ‘Social Networking’ (Websites like Facebook, Twitter, Bebo, etc). Are they GOOD or BAD – why? (Choose a side)
Create two sets of exaggerations about the same thing. Choose anything • “It’s so good that....” three times Food, sport, TV, • “It’s so bad that....” three times. Argue both sides
Facts • Wikipedia is a good place to start but DO NOT trust it. Anyone can add to this great site – UNRELIABILITY. • Good sources for facts: • Newspapers and their websites. • The ‘Homepage’ of any group or company. • People you can name – who are not ANNONYMOUS. • Who could you trust for information on the internet – what professions or positions that people hold?
Example • Award winning blogger and marketer, Danny Brown noted the following facts. • The average Facebook user has 130 “friends”. • Twitter gets more than 300,000 new users every day. • You would need to live for around 1,000 years to watch all the videos currently on YouTube. • We don’t even trust Danny though – so we ALWAYS look for a second ‘source’ to confirm the information. The Telegraph.co.uk and Facebook agree with him.
ANY information you use – find two sources which say it is right.
Activity • You’re going to write short speeches arguing for or against ‘Social Networking’. • To help, I want to put both sides of the argument on the board. • If you can put a positive thing about websites like Facebook on the board that I CANNOT refute (list as a negative) you get a prize. Each Volunteer gets one chance.
Activity – list positive aspects • Everyone look to the view you wrote at the beginning of class. Hands up if you said ‘Social Networking’ was good.
Homework • Finish that speech. • Everyone find one fact, quote or interesting piece of information about the internet for next week and name where you found it.
Debating Checklist • Here are some aspects of debating. Whenever we do one of these in class, put a tick beside it.
