  19. Chapter 7 1-16 The question of and the place of tradition in the lives of followers of the Lord. 1-4 Mark explains the basis of the law and tradition because he is writing primarily for Gentiles. 9-13 Jesus encounters the argument by showing how the law can be misused.

  21. Chapter 7 – cont’d The power of Faith Pre-figures the later Church, i.e. Catholic: for all people “Dogs” a term used by Jews to show their abhorrence of paganism Jesus cures go beyond the Jews to Gentiles also. This prefigures the later Church which will be Catholic: for all people.

  23. Chapter 8 1 – 9 Feeding of the four thousand. Duplicates 6:34-44. 11-13 Pharisees want a sign: argue that what Jesus does is not satisfactory as proof of the arrival of God’s Kingdom.

  24. Chapter 8 – cont’d Jesus answer: a sign demanded by human distrust will not be provided. Faith is needed to see the significance of his actions. 14-21 The blindness of his disciples who fail to see the deeper meaning of his actions.

  25. Chapter 8 – cont’d 22-26 The cure of the blind man. This healing seems to resist Jesus: a symbol of his disciples who cannot see yet. Their tradition has failed to provide them with an adequate understanding of the coming Messiah. (see Acts 1:6-11)
