  2. When you think of pop culture of the 90’s what comes to mind?

  3. Television • Reached 98% of the households in the U.S. in 1998 • Average viewer spending 7 hours a day watching 'the tube'. • 1996, the television industry announced a  TV Parental Guideline rating system.

  4. Cable • Cable Television would produce Networks like CNN,TNN,TNT,CSPAN,ESPN,the Shopping Network. • And if you were looking for movies, networks like HBO • wanted music, all you had to do was tune into networks like The Nashville Network(TNN) or MTV.

  5. News or New Magazines Shows • 60 minutes • 20/20 • Dateline NBC • CNN – live coverage of the 1991 Gulf War

  6. "15 Minutes of Fame Decade" • Media Frenzy • O.J. Simpson • Monica Lewinsky • Princess Diana

  7. Talk Shows • The most popular television talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show took the high ground in the explosion of talk shows in the 1990s. • Focused on • Personal empowerment, social activism and books

Guests came on talk shows voluntarily to air their grievances; reveal deep, dark secrets; or be reunited with mysterious people from their pasts. • According to many guests, producers often tried to whip them into a frenzy before they went on the air. • The resultant televised emotional outbursts proved entertaining for audiences and took hosts such as Ricki Lake and Jerry Springer to the top of daytime television.

  12. The Simpsons (1989 - ) • Becomes popular with adult audiences, eventually paving the way for many adult-oriented animatedtelevision shows throughout the next 10 years, including Beavis and Butthead, South Park, Family Guy and King of the Hill.

  13. Nickelodeon gains popularity with the Nicktoons block of shows, such as Doug, Rugrats, The Ren and Stimpy Show, Rocko's Modern Life

  14. Television shows involving human interaction with dangerous wildlife become popular. Most notably shows like The Crocodile Hunter, a popular series starring Steve Irwin, which began airing in 1996. The Crocodile Hunter, and other similar shows (many of which involved Steve Irwin) remained popular into the 2000s.

MTV originally  soap opera, but the costs were too high, so they thought "what if we could get rid of writers, and scripts, and sets?". • Resulted on the first Real World, set in NY neighborhood of SoHo, Manhattan, • Where 7 people that had never met before had to live in a house together for some time.

  19. The year 2000 • Mark Burnett create a legacy with a show called "Survivor".
