  2. Letters MU “Away” Team • Receive your letter of request and clearances today. “Home” Team • A letter of request with clearances will be sent tomorrow. Check placement info. • Both Teams • Contact your school to make arrangements to attend. (Home team: allow some time for the letter to be received.)

  3. Clearances/changes? • Have clearances? • School districts require a copy of clearances for you to enter a school for field experience. • You will need clearances during advisement in order to sign up for future fields. • Any changes in field location? • E-mail Dr. Steve with any changes.

  4. If You Do Not Have Clearances • If you are missing one clearance, you may be accepted to a field placement. Just carry the clearance with you. • If you have not applied for clearances, you may need to schedule the field placement later in the semester. Worst Case Scenario: Take a “U” in course this semester, and have the grade changed when you complete the field placement.

Course SequenceCore Courses (cont’d) • 6 credits in each of the following: • Mathematics (2 courses/6 credits) • 1 course must be statistics. • Science (any 2 courses/6-8 credits) • One course must have a lab. • Behavioral Science (2 courses/6 credits) • Introduction to Psychology • Comparative Sociology • Contemporary Economics Choose 2. Macroeconomics and Microeconomics are 2 additional choices, usually taken by business majors. History sec. ed.

Course SequenceWriting Intensives • When electing core courses, students complete a total of 2writing intensive courses. • Writing intensives may be in any field (not just English). • Honors students do nothave to elect 2 writingintensive courses. ENG 151 University Writing Seminar is a prerequisite to taking writing intensive courses.

Course SequenceWriting Intensives • Writing counts for at least 60% of grade. • Total of 12 double-spaced pages of writing in course. • Minimum of 3 writing assignments. • Revisions required for at least 2 assignments. • Maintain a writing portfolio (rough drafts, final copy, and feedback). ENG 151 University Writing Seminar is a prerequisite to taking writing intensive courses.

  14. Course SequenceBy the End of Sophomore Year • By the end of sophomore year (before formal admission to TED), you must have completed: • 2 math courses (1 has to be statistics) • ENG 151 University Writing Seminar • 1 literature course (American literature)

Technical Competency TestTraditional Students • Automatically enrolled for TC000. • 50-minute, hands-on PC-based test takes place during FYE. • Covers Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. • Online video tutorials are available. • Passing score is 70%. • If failed, automatically re-enrolled for next semester.

  16. Technical Competency TestTransfer Students • Automatically enrolled for TC100. • Online tutorial/exam. • Take until you pass.

Flexibility in Electing Courses • When should I take TED courses? • Where they are suggested in the sequence. • Your advisor will help with this. • When should I take core courses? • Take core courses as they fit into your schedule. (They are suggested in the sequence.) • Just complete the core before graduation.

  18. Summer Courses? • If you would like to lighten your course load in future semesters, consider taking a course(s) during the summer. • 6 credits in summer = freedorm. • Talk to your advisor to plan.

Transferring Credits into MU • All students may transfer in 9additional credits while attending MU (6 credits may be core). • For summer courses, apply through the Office of Summer Studies in April. Students who have earned 60 or more credits may not take courses at a 2-year (community or junior) college. Courses must be taken from a 4-year college.

  22. Fields Tied to Courses • Fields are “tied” to specific courses (like labs are in the sciences). • Fields focus on content covered in the accompanying course.

  23. What Is Field Experience? • TED students complete a developmental series of field experiences that culminate with a full semester of Student Teaching. • Fields link theory and practice. Link

Purpose of Field Experience • Purpose of your TED courses: • Prepare you in theory, knowledge, and simulation to be a teacher. • Purpose of field work is to: • Prepare you to be a teacher with practical experience in the classroom. • Help you link theory and practice. • Get you ready for the real world of teaching.

  33. About Field Experience • Field experience is: • Associated (tied) to a particular course. • Completed during the regular semester. • A graded experience. Grading policy will be explained in the accompanying course. • Required by MU, TED, and PDE.

  34. Field experience is meant to… • Help you discover the real world of teaching. • Lessen your anxiety about teaching. • Help you gain the skills it takes to succeed in teaching. • Prepare you gradually for teaching.

  35. Sequence of Involvement • Observe veteran teachers. • Assistveteran teachers. • Gradually teach more (practicum). • Teach full-time (student teaching). Our field experience program is developmental; the farther you go into our curriculum, the more advanced the field work becomes.

  36. All students participate in field experience each semester. Transfer students do not need to make up missed fields.

Scheduling Field Experience • Location of placements: • For some fields, you get to choose where you go (district, building, grade, teacher). • For some fields, all students are sent to a particular location. • Scheduling of field experience: • Some fields are arranged at set times and days. • For some fields, you get to arrange certain aspects of scheduling. (Time slots are blocked in the schedule.)

To qualify for student teaching… • GPA: Have minimum 3.0 GPA. • Exams: Successfully completed PAPA. • Fields: Completed field experiences. • Recommendations: Obtain from TED faculty. • Courses: Completed all courses required by TED. • Clearances: Act 34, 151, 114, and 24. • Medical/psychological: Document absence of any mental or physical condition which might disqualify you from state certification.

  48. Field ExperiencePreparing for Student Teaching • Be on the “lookout” during fields: • Teacher you would feel comfortable working with. • Grade level you would enjoy teaching. • School district you like.

  49. Student Teaching Placement • All requests for student teaching placements should be within a 60-mile radius of Misericordia (with the exception of opportunities for student teaching experiences abroad). Exceptions can be made. Discuss with your advisor and Mrs. Brague.

  50. What Is Student Teaching Like? • TED 498 Student Teaching (spring or fall) • 9 credits • Full-time teaching: approximate the roles and responsibilities of classroom teachers.
