  1. Thursday, January 19, 2012 Bell Work: Journal– With which community do you spend the most time? What activities do you share? What community do you want to be a part of but are not?

  2. Objectives • Write an engaging lead for the name paragraph. • Peer review paragraphs.

  3. How to Write a Lead: #1 • Begin with a quote – “What’s in a name? That which we know as a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” William Shakespeare may have thought a rose would have been the same even if it was called a roach, but I think my specific name has helped make me who I am.

  4. How to Write a Lead #2 • Begin with dialogue – “Hey, You!” Imagine that you were only addressed in that way, and it makes you realize the importance of your name. • “What should we call him/her?” My mom and dad debated over who I should be before they even knew me. They spent hours poring over baby books and talking to other people before they finally settled on… Amanda.

  5. How to Write a Lead #3 • Begin with a question – Have you ever thought about the meaning of your name? Knowing what my name means, how I got it, and the story behind it has made my name more significant to me.

  6. Main Idea Statement • Make sure to include the main points of your paper in a statement that lets the reader know where you are going. • The meaning of my first, middle, and last names surround me with confidence and help me know who I am. • Knowing the meaning of my name, the story behind how I got it, and the love behind the choice of my nickname makes me appreciate my name more than ever.

  7. Revise • Write a new lead for either your graphic organizer or rough draft. • Add a main idea statement if you don’t already have one. • Look for ways to combine sentences and ramp up your vocabulary to add to the sophistication of your name.

  8. Peer Review • Three before me • Find three people to read your paper before you prepare the final copy. • Write comments either on the paper or on post-its to help your classmate achieve a better grade.

  9. Final Copy • Prepare your final copy. • Write in blue or black ink or you may type. • Turn your paper in tomorrow at the beginning of class.
