  1. CTAS Collaborative Arrival Planning (CAP) CTAS ZFW/DFW Digital Data to Industry Greg Carr NASA Ames Research Center Moffett Field, CA 650 604-2545 gcarr@mail.arc.nasa.gov Presented at the ATA/FAA CDM Meeting Memphis, TN December 15, 1999

  2. Collaborative Arrival Planning (CAP) Objective • Improve the efficiency of air carrier operations and increase NAS flexibility. Components • Information sharing between ATC and air carriers. • Air carrier / ATC collaborative decision-support tools. Airline Operational Control Center Airline Ramp Tower

  3. Information Sharing • CAP displays a specialized, filtered “repeater” of the operational FAA CTAS TMA system at ZFW. • CTAS information • Accurate arrival time estimates • Metering delays • Arrival sequence • Center/TRACON/Airport information • Airport acceptance rate (AAR) • Runway configuration • ARTS runway assignments

  4. Improved Arrival Time Prediction

  5. CAP operating at American Airlines’ DFW System Operational Control Center since April, 1998 Airline Operational Control • Enables dispatchers to make better hold/go decisions during periods of extended airborne holding. • Supports strategic fleet planning decisions.

  6. Ramp Tower • Enables better decisions whether or not to hold flights to make passenger connections. • Allows more effective management of ground resources (e.g., gates, baggage-handling, catering, maintenance.) • CAP operating at Delta Air Lines’ DFW Airport Coordination Center since August, 1999

  7. CTAS Digital Data to Industry • Digital data generated on NASA/FAA CTAS TMA system at ZFW. • Sent to Volpe Center over dedicated T1 line. • Volpe filters CTAS data. • Digital data sent from Volpe to air carriers via CDMnet. CAPServer

  8. CTAS Data Content • Category I: Per-flight Data • Message Timestamp • Aircraft Identifiers • Aircraft ZFW Center ID • TRACON Host Name and Aircraft TRACON ID • Aircraft call sign • Aircraft CTAS (TMA) Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) • Aircraft CTAS (TMA) ETA to metering fix • Aircraft CTAS (TMA) ETA to runway threshold • Aircraft CTAS (TMA ) Scheduled Time of Arrival (STA) • Aircraft CTAS (TMA) STA to metering fix • Aircraft CTAS (TMA) STA to runway threshold • Aircraft ARTS “scratchpad” runway assignment • Aircraft 3-d position and speed data • Latitude • Longitude • Altitude • Flight plan route

  9. CTAS Data Content • Category II: Airport Data • Airport Configuration • Airport name • Flight rule (VFR/IFR) • Available runways • Metering State (ZFW) • Airport Acceptance Rate

  10. CTAS Digital Data to Industry • Data will only be provided in digital format. • NASA/FAA/Volpe will NOT provide new display tools. • Air carriers will “subscribe” to Volpe for CTAS data. • Socket connection similar to SMA digital data. • Interface Control Document (ICD) • Data format/content. • HW/SW requirements for connection. • FAA/Air Carrier MOA will govern use of digital CTAS data. • Carriers must sign MOA to have access to digital CTAS data. • Schedule • CTAS digital data available ~ Summer 00.

  11. CTAS Digital Data to Industry • Points of Contact • NASA • Greg Carr (Ames) 650 604-2545 • Shawn Engelland (NTX) 817 858-7634 • Volpe • Len Kurzweil 617 494-2238 • Rick Oiesen 617 494-2309
