  4. Colonization in 17th century • began by Europeans • WilemJansz – Dutch sailor • Abel Tasman – Dutch explorer - discovered Tasmania ( Van Diemenov country) - pesious metal, spices • William Dampier- British pirate

  5. James Cook • arrival in 1770 • called after 2 scientists • declaration – British territory • crashed near Cooktown

  6. 18. century – Australia as a prisoners’ area • decision of GB • Prisoners’ colony • 1787- arrival of the first prisoners • Botany Bay, Port Jackson ( Sydney ) • voluntary immigrants

  8. 19. century – Settlement of inland, gold rush • growing population- moving • Gold rush- Bathrust, New South Wales - 19th century - immigration - population reached one million

  9. 20. century • Commonwealth - connection of Australian colonies – 1901- established by queen Victoria • Recognition of native inhabitants - 1960 – full-right citizens- 1993 – land was given back
