[in Just-] by e.e. cummings • Diction- The diction used gives the poem a happy, light feeling with words such as “mud-luscious”, “puddle-wonderful”, and “dancing.” The diction allows the reader to feel the happy innocence of childhood and more specifically childhood in the spring. The poem is about children coming out to play because spring has just begun.

  3. Images- The images used create a playful, childlike state in the readers mind. Images like “whistles fare and wee”, “running from marbles”, and “come dancing from hop-scotch and jump-rope” are very descriptive in the activities the children are playing outside and childhood games many people can relate to. The images show the carefree nature springtime brings.

  4. Details- The details that are used to describe the balloonman are sort of mysterious. Not much is said about the balloonman until the end and he is referred to as “goat-footed” which is creepy. The balloonman is also referred to as the “little lame balloonman” and “the queer old balloonman.” even though the overall tone is happy and childlike the description of the balloonman adds a sense of creepiness to the poem.

Language- The language used is how a child would speak sometimes such as “eddieandbill” and “bettyandisbel.” “Whistles far and wee” is repeated throughout the poem to add emphasis to the balloonman’s actions to show that all he has to do is whistle and the kids come running to him. The simple words add to the simplicity of childhood where there weren’t many cares. The poem has a very happy tone because of the simplicity and innocence of childhood. “It’s spring when the world is puddle-wonderful.”

  6. Sentence Structure- There is no rhyme scheme or structure to the poem. The structure of the poem gives the poem childlike qualities. There are breaks between words which is much like a child and how they think in not complete sentences. This gives the poem a light, happy feeling because to children springtime is a happy time.
