  2. Bodies of Water • There is only one major river that is in Baghdad and it is the Tigris River. It stretches over 1,000 miles and It eventually connects with the Euphrates river by a canal. In ancient times, many of the great cities of Mesopotamia stood on or near the Tigris River, drawing water from it. The river also has been an very important transportation route.

  4. The National Museum of Baghdad • The National Museum of Baghdad is among the most important in the world. It contains artifacts from the 5,000 year long history of the Mesopotamia. On April 10 and 12 of 2003 there was looting in the museum. Many artifacts were stolen. Looters smashed and destroyed most of the statues and everything else. After this the Museum was closed and still isn’t open. The prime minister of Iraq was trying to reopen it in 2009 to show the progress Iraq has been making, but it just hasn’t worked out.

  5. Baghdad’s Tower • It was previously call international Saddam Tower. It is 673 feet tall and is a TV Tower in Baghdad, Iraq. The tower opened in 1994 and replaced the communications tower destroyed in the Gulf War. An observation deck and revolving restaurant are located on the top floor. During the invasion of Iraq, the tower was occupied by American soldiers who named it the Baghdad Tower. Now they are rebuilding the tower and it surroundings around it that were damaged.

  6. AL Zawra Park • AL Zawra Park is the biggest park in Iraq. It saw a huge amount of visitors each day in 2007. Families would just go there to walk, relax and enjoy themselves and to get away from the war. In the last few years this park has received massive bombs attacks and the U.S. has been controlling this area. This is causing the families not to come the park. This park has beautiful waterfalls, artificial rivers, it also had a zoo and playgrounds. It was a great tourist attraction, if it wasn’t for the war it still would be.

  7. Baghdad Zoo • The Baghdad zoo is 200-acres. The zoo oringally open in 1971. Before the invasion of 2003 the zoo was a home to over 650 animals. After being damaged badly in the war, only about 35 animals survived. Today the zoo is reopen and is now home to 1,070 animals.

  8. Al-Shaheed Monument • The Al-Shaheed Monument, also known as the Martyr’s Memorial. The monument is dedicated to the Iraqi soldiers who died in the Iraq-Iran war, it was opened in 1983. During the 1970s-1980s the government spent a lot of money on new monuments, which included the Al-Shaheed Monument. Around the monument there is playground, parking lots, walkways, bridges, and the lake. A museum, library, cafertia, lecture hall and exhibition gallery are located two levels underneath the domes.

  9. Major Language • Baghdad’s major language is Arabic. About 60%-70% speak Arabic.

  10. Government • The government of Baghdad is divided into a hierarchy of governments that both aid governance and provide bottom-up representation. Baghdad’s governorate is province. The government of Baghdad as well as the rest of Iraq was thrown into disarray following the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

  12. Economy • Baghdad’s economy was the richest in Iraq before the war started in 2003. Baghdad used currency and there unit is dinar.

  13. Common Food of Iraq • They eat rice, chicken, goat, sheep, donkey, beef, sweet potatoes, bread, cheese, and different fruit. The Arabic breakfast foods are fava beans cooked with garbanzo beans, garlic, lemon and olive oil.

  14. Facts • Baghdad is the capital of Iraq. • It’s population is estimated at 7 million. • It is the second largest city in Arab world and the second largest city in southwest Asia. • The city was designed to be a circle and became known as the “round city”.

  15. Religion • Baghdad’s main religion is Islam. Muslim is another name for Islam. Muslim follow a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness.
