  2. Feudalism is … • Caused by a lack of a central government • A rigid social class structure • Land exchanged for military service and obligations • political, economic, and social power was based on the amount of land you owned

  3. The Manor All aspects of life in feudal Europe were completely centered on the Manor. The Manor is the estate owned by the lord on which the serfs lived and worked.

The Manorial System • Read the selection about manorialism. • Underline/highlight key characteristics of the manor system. • Answer the questions after you read. • What was the purpose of the castle? • What does it mean to be self-sufficient? • Mountains isolate civilizations as well as protect them. How does a manor serve the same purpose?
