  1. ORFEUS Torild van Eck & Chad Trabant Why is ORFEUS interested in distributed OO computing? • Presentation ORFEUS • Present status Orfeus Data Center • ORFEUS dreams and reality

  2. ORFEUS Organizations and Research Facilities for EUropean Seismology European non-profit foundation that aims at co-ordination and promoting digital, broadband (BB) seismology in the European-Mediterranean area. [13 corporate founders, 64 (mostly) academic institutes] Core activity: ORFEUS Data Center • Objective: • European earthquake high quality waveform data archive • Policy: • Open data (emphasis on research community) • Requirements: • Homogeneous format, complete description (SEED) • Systematic archives (events and continuous) • Easy and rapid data access/search

  3. ORFEUS coordination activities • Station siting (WG1) (chair: Josep Vila, Barcelona) • Coordinating BB station siting in Europe and its surroundings. • European BB station inventory. • Overview BB sensors and data acquisition systems • Technical Support (WG2) (chair: Damiano Pesaresi, Rome) • Gather and disseminate technical information. • Coordinate technical assistance on BB sensors and data-loggers. • Mobile stations (WG3) (Chair: Paul Denton, Leicester) • Maintain instrumentation inventory • Coordinate data archiving and dissemination • Seismological software (WG4) (chair: Manfred Baer, Zurich) • Seismological Software Library (Unix, Linux, PC and Mac) • Coordinate software developments within seismology. http://orfeus.knmi.nl

  4. The EC project MEREDIAN Mediterranean-European Rapid Earthquake Data Information and Archiving Network Start date: November 1, 2000 MEREDIAN consortium: 18 participants End date: April 30, 2005 Goal: Initialize real-time waveform data exchange in Europe, make previously inaccessible data available to the research community, developing a distributed archive WP1: Improving and securing data archival WP2: Improving rapid cross border data exchange WP3: Developing a distributed European seismological archive WP4: Seismological software co-ordination http://orfeus.knmi.nl/meredian

  5. VEBSN (BB) stations in Europe and its vicinity (status 1/4/2003) Full information available on: http://orfeus.knmi.nl/VEBSN

  6. ODC data holdings

  7. ODC data pipeline

  8. Dreams or reality ? about research with seismological (waveform) data from anywhere? • available data (waveform, parameters, event, station, data information) • rapid access and search capabilities • analysis and integration with other geoscience data • automated creation of level 2 data ORFEUS Present involvement: BB-data production archiving exchange processing and analysis ORFEUS http://orfeus.knmi.nl/

  9. Broadband (BB) stations in Europe (status 1/4/2003) Full information is presently accessible in a database at: http://orfeus.knmi.nl Source: ORFEUS WG1

  10. Stations in Europe and its Vicinity 1/7/2003 SP BB Source: ORFEUS/EMSC

  11. ORFEUS activities: Data production ORFEUS coordinates, but does not operate stations • ORFEUS working group 1: “Station siting” • - Inventories • stations siting/standards: • VEBSN and regional network coordination? • networking protocols? • ORFEUS working group 2: “Technical Support” • instrumentation (sensors and DAS) • technical documentation and networking • data exchange technologies?

  12. ORFEUS activities: Data exchange • ORFEUS coordinates EuroMed BB waveform data exchange • standardization of data exchange protocols: • SeedLink [waveform data], mostly (near) real-time applications • Format (mini)SEED • AutoDRM [parameter and waveform data] non real-time applications • Formats (GSE and SEED) • - XML? format discussions • MEREDIAN project (EC) provide assistance with: • AutoDRM installation • SeedLink plugins • SeedLink implementation

  13. ORFEUS activities: Data archiving • EuroMed BB waveform event data • EuroMed continuous data? • Alternative 1: Central data archive • Alternative 2: Distributed European Data Archive. • How to realize this? NetDC • Standardization of data archiving format: • SEED [waveform data] • Format conversion: • GSE2SEED (Reinoud Sleeman) • X2SEED conversion programs. • MEREDIAN project (EC) provide assistance with: • dataless SEED volumes [facilitate]

  14. ORFEUS activities: Data processing and analysis • ORFEUS working group 4 and ODC • - Seismological Software Library [freely available software] • initiatives to coordinate developments: • SeisComP [freeware, MEREDIAN] • QuakeExplorer [freeware, Lomax/MEREDIAN] • - involvement in developments for: • Antelope [commercial] • EarthWorm [freeware (+ Oracle, commercial)] • Seisan [freeware] • coordinate data exchange mechanisms • - where and when should we introduce OO standards? • should we coordinate OO programming? • specific OO web pages? Target public?

  15. Seismic stations in Europe and its immediate vicinity Link this data to other geoscience data. How? What can ORFEUS do? SP BB Source: ORFEUS/EMSC
