  1. DRIVEDistributed Real-time Interactive Virtual Environment • PC/Linux based Virtual Reality: • commodity computing/graphics hardware • 67 inch multi-user projection screen • stereoscopic 3D • head and hand tracking • software compatible withCAVE systems • immersive visualization frontend forthe Virtual Laboratory • High performance at fraction of the cost of • commercial systems.

  2. Middleware • Communication interface between simulation and interactive visualization environment • The Virtual Lab Abstract Machine: • middleware for the communication between distributed, heterogeneous computing resources, • allows dynamic exploration through interaction with simulation and visualization.

  3. Simulated Vascular Reconstruction • Simulated Vascular Reconstruction in a Virtual Operating Theatre • patient specific vascular geometry • blood flow simulation • pre-operative planning • In cooperation withLeiden University Medical Center(LUMC, prof. Reiber) Simulated bypass Patient’s vascular geometry

  4. Current status PSE for Medicine • Vascular Reconstruction Environment components distributed over UvA and LUMC (Leiden), • Connected to Grid and Virtual Laboratory, • Data transfer and storage operational, • Desktop Virtual Reality Engine (DRIVE) built at UvA, • New contacts with e-science UK, Medigon (NL) and Virtual Medical Worlds, • 3 new publications since last update, • 2 new proposals are being prepared (IST, Token2000).

  5. Future plans: VL-Medicine • New: Medical decision support system for infectious diseases (HIV). • Goal: Couple genomic, mutation Dbases, Patient Dbases and Drug response data to assist in prediction best drug. • Approach: Federate Dbases and Fuzzy logic to model and abstract • Collaboration: Virology Networks, Prof. C. Boucher (Utrecht), AMC. • Continuation Interaction in Grid Applications • Goal: Near real-time response for computational steering over the Grid • Application: Vascular reconstruction / Operation theatre • Approach: Combine VL primitives with HPC and VR.
