  1. Constructing a Chromosome Map Walkthrough

  2. Our Mission: K12 / Aventa Learning Instructional Services Team provides students the opportunity to become academically successful by providing rigorous curricula and instruction in a technology-enabled environment with its School Partners.

  3. Chromosome Map

  4. Chromosome Map • Chromosome maps are used to predict the chance certain genes will be separated during crossing over • Crossing over happens during Prophase I of Meiosis.

  5. Chromosome Map

  6. Chromosome Map • Example: DO NOT USE THIS FOR THE LAB • V-U 15 U-X 55 * = 5 units • V-W 5 U-Y 35 • V-X 40 W-X 35 • V-Y 20 W-Y 15 • U-W 20 X-Y 20 • V**U

  7. Chromosome Map • Example: DO NOT USE THIS FOR THE LAB • V-U 15 U-X 60 * = 5 units • V-W 5 U-Y 35 • V-X 40 W-X 35 • V-Y 20 W-Y 15 • U-W 20 X-Y 20 • VW*U (Not correct because U-W 20)

  8. Chromosome Map • Example: DO NOT USE THIS FOR THE LAB • V-U 15 U-X 60 * = 5 units • V-W 5 U-Y 35 • V-X 40 W-X 35 • V-Y 20 W-Y 15 • U-W 20 X-Y 20 • U**VW (The information about U says it is far away from a lot of other genes)

  9. Chromosome Map • Example: DO NOT USE THIS FOR THE LAB • V-U 15 U-X 55 * = 5 units • V-W 5 U-Y 35 • V-X 40 W-X 35 • V-Y 20 W-Y 15 • U-W 20 X-Y 20 • U**VW******X

  10. Chromosome Map • Example: DO NOT USE THIS FOR THE LAB • V-U 15 U-X 60 * = 5 units • V-W 5 U-Y 35 • V-X 40 W-X 35 • V-Y 20 W-Y 15 • U-W 20 X-Y 20 • U**VW**Y***X (or X***Y**WV**U)

  11. Chromosome Map • Practice: • H-I 10 I-K 40 • H-J 15 I-L 15 • H-K 30 J-K 15 • H-L 25 J-L 40 • I-J 25 K-L 55 • Please pause to complete your chromosome map; press “play” when you are done

  12. Chromosome Map • Practice: • H-I 10 I-K 40 • H-J 15 I-L 15 • H-K 30 J-K 15 • H-L 25 J-L 40 • I-J 25 K-L 55 • * = 5 units • L**I*H**J**K (or K**J**H*I**L)

  13. Chromosome Map • Practice: • J-M 10 • Can you place M? • L**I*H**J**K • Think for a moment

  14. Chromosome Map • Practice: • J-M 10 • Can you place M? • L**I*H**J**K • M is 10 units from J. Where to place it? • L**I*HM*J**K or L**I*H**J*MK • Both are correct in relation to J, but we can’t place M unless we know how M relates to two genes

  15. Chromosome Map • We need to know where a gene is in relation to two different genes. • J-M 10 H-M 25 • Can you place M? • L**I*HM*J**K or L**I*H**J*MK • L**I*H**J*MK  correct because we know M is 25 units away from H • (or KM*J**H*I**L)

  16. Chromosome Map • Assignment:

  17. Chromosome Map • Save file as First initial_Lastname_ChromosomeMap • Submit
