  1. Bible Study Week Five of Lent 2014 Gospel of Mark

  2. Mark 13: This entire chapter deals with Jesus’ warnings, descriptions, and exhortations concerning what the end time will look like, and how disciples ought to respond. Rather than deal with each section of the chapter in depth, I will summarize each part and highlight relevant applications at the end of the summary. Mark 13: 1-2: Here, in response to the disciples’ awe of the Temple, Jesus states that the Temple will be destroyed. Mark 13:3-8: Jesus warns of false prophets and coming wars.

  3. Mark 13:9-13: This warning concerns the persecution of the disciples. Mark 13:14-20: This is the specific warning of the desecration of the Temple and subsequent need for flight from Jerusalem. Mark 13:32-37: The chapter ends with Jesus’ assertion that no one knows the time when these things will be. He adds that since the end cannot be predicted the disciples must “watch”.

  4. Themes to Apply: • How does the destruction of the “magnificent” Temple relate to our understanding of the church today? • Jesus warns twice of “false prophets”. Is this still an issue for the church? How would these prophets be identified? • Another warning Jesus gives concerns the persecution of His followers (the church). Is the church persecuted today or is this something that was relevant for Jesus’ contemporaries and perhaps during the last days? • Jesus describes wars, false prophets, persecution, natural catastrophes, are you aware of this anywhere else in scripture? Have these events already happened or are they yet to be? Should these warnings be a source of disturbance or comfort to the Christian?
