In this week's focus on environmental systems, students will delve into the critical role oceans play in our ecosystem while understanding the implications of species extinction. Through various activities, including examining biotic and abiotic factors, discussing the importance of insects, and analyzing carnivorous plants, students will enhance their comprehension of ecological relationships. Engaging with interactive notebooks and participating in a scavenger hunt, they will demonstrate their grasp of safety in the lab and fundamental environmental concepts, fostering a deeper appreciation for our planet's systems.

Week Five Environmental Systems 2010
September 20, 2010 • Objective: Student knows the relationships of biotic and abiotic factors, within habitats, ecosystems and biomes. • Focus: Why is the ocean important? • Activity: Go over exam, spiral, expectations. • Take notes over oceans.
September 21, 2010 • Objective: Student can predict how the extinction of a species will influence existing populations and ecosystems. • Focus: What would happen if insects became extinct? (what does extinct mean?) • Activity: Go over each question on Friday exam to check for understanding of vocabulary. • From Monday: Why is the ocean important to the environment?
Wednesday, September 22 • Objective: Student will understand concepts of extinction of species related to human interactions with the environment. • Focus: What is a carnivorous plant? • Activity: Go over the photos from the Big Thicket for carnivorous plants. Watch the video “The Lorax”. • Time permitting, continue the deep sea investigation from Tuesday after the video.
Thursday, September 23 • Objective: Students will demonstrate understanding of concepts of observation in a biome. • Focus: What type of ecosystem or biome would you construct if it were possible? • Activity: Scavenger hunt
Friday, September 24 • Objective: Student will understand the ongoing concepts of safety in the lab. • Focus: what is the most important safety rule? • Activity: Retake safety exam, complete class work and work on interactive notebook for environmental systems.
