  1. Service Learning vs. Community Service 4-H Afterschool Presented by: Angie Freel, County Extension Agent – 4-H Saline County

  2. What is Service-Learning? “…a teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.”

  3. What is Community Service? Community service is a service performed for the benefit of the public or its institution.

  4. Both Community Service and Service Learning are valuable. SL takes CS to another level.

  5. Example of Community Service If students remove trash from a streambed or side of the road: they are providing a service to the community as volunteers

  7. Expanding the food drive idea… Discuss Nutrition in class Read The Can-Do Thanksgiving Students contact Food Bank Students Record Foods Collected Connect with Math by Graphing types of food Students take part in the delivery of food Students reflect/journal about the experience

  8. Example of Service-Learning • When students remove trash from a streambed, • Analyze what they found • Share the results and offer • Suggestions to public or government to reduce pollution • Reflect on their experience

  9. More Examples of Service Learning Kids in Florida studied the consequences of natural disasters. The class designed a kit for families to use to collect their important papers in case of evacuation with a checklist, tips about rescuing pets, and other advice to make a difficult situation easier, which students distributed to communities.

  10. And more… Middle school students in Pennsylvania learned about the health consequences of poor nutrition and lack of exercise, and then brought their learning to life by conducting health fairs, creating a healthy cookbook, and opening a fresh fruit and vegetable stand for the school and community.

  11. More… Girl Scouts in West Virginia investigated the biological complexity and diversity of wetlands. Learning of the need to eliminate invasive species they decided to monitor streams, and presented their findings to their Town Council to raise awareness of the issues concerning local wetlands.

  12. More… University students in Michigan looked for ways to support struggling local non-profit organizations during difficult economic times. Communication students honed their skills while providing a wide variety of public relations services with community partners, including developing press kits and managing event coordination.

  13. How it fits into 4-H School-based service-learning is typically tied to academic learning, and community-based programs focus on the type of learning most closely related to their mission (such as youth development, civic responsibility, character development, or health awareness). Is that 4-H or what?

  14. How 4-H is a perfect fit! Without school standards and fixed schedules, community-based programs can be more creative and devote longer periods of time to planning, completing, and reflecting on activities.
