Introducing SRC: A Model for Corporate Social Responsibility • In 2007, the SRC UW campaign raised approximately $48K • In 2013, the campaign generated over $400K • How did this happen? • Educating Senior Management about United Way • Forming a United Way Committee of staff volunteers • Hosting Fun Events • Bringing in Agency speakers to educate the staff • Matching employee donations • Raising Awareness through group volunteer activities United Way of Central New York

Corporate Best Practices – Align with UW • Give • Maintaining an enthusiastic work place campaign • Encouraging Leadership Donors • Paying dependents of SRC staff to intern at local non-profits • Advocate • Corporate Staff members serve on United Way and other non-profit Board of Directors • Encourage other companies to increase support (step-up challenge, presentations, etc.) • Volunteer • Coordinate group and Individual events • Report employee hours given back to the community United Way of Central New York

A Unique Way of Giving Back • SRC created the Community Internship program in the summer of 2013 • After successful pilot, SRC decide to continue program • The remainder of this presentation will focus on this very unique way of giving back to the community that is a win for all involved United Way of Central New York

SRC Internship Program Overview • Dependents of employees are paid by SRC to work at local non-profit organization • Win-win-win (employee/student – organization – community) • Start in June = max 12 weeks • 20-40 hours/week - schedule negotiated in advance • Eligibility • Dependent child of an employee (any location) • Completed 1 year of a higher education program • Enrolled in 2013-2014 college program • Cumulative GPA 2.5+ • Max of 3 SRC Community Internships United Way of Central New York

Measuring The Internship Program • Qualitative* • Participation (yr. 1: 50 students, 30 organizations) • 16,370 hours provided to non-profits (~29 hours per week, per student) • Retention - 100% of organizations & 73% students indicated interest for 2014 • Qualitative – survey data • Student experience: 63% Incredible, 34% Pretty Good, 3% Just OK • Organization experience: 87.5% Excellent, 12.5% Good “It is an experience that I will take with me forever. I could not of asked for a better summer job.” * Influenced by many factors (# of employees with college-age children, student majors, etc.) United Way of Central New York

Student Feedback • How did this experience compare to other jobs or internships you’ve had? • Much better – 73% • A little better- 19% • About the same- 8% “This is one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. The level of fulfillment I gained from being able to work and give back to my community has really put me in a good place in life right now! I am happier now than when I began this internship and I have found a cause to champion in my community!” United Way of Central New York
