Depression
This analysis delves into powerful themes of depression, love, and existential struggle within the works of renowned poets Alexander Pushkin, Les Murray, and Emily Dickinson. Pushkin’s “The Wish” reflects on the complex interplay between love and despair, while Murray's "Travels with John Hunter" captures the haunting reality of health struggles. Dickinson’s “I Felt a Funeral, in My Brain” employs rhythm and metaphor to convey a loss of hope. Each poem, rich in language and imagery, provides insight into the human experience shaped by pain and longing.

The wish by Alexander Pushkin • I shed my tears; my tears – my consolation; And I am silent; my murmur is dead,My soul, sunk in a depression’s shade,Hides in its depths the bitter exultation.I don’t deplore my passing dream of life --Vanish in dark, the empty apparition!I care only for my love’s infliction,And let me die, but only die in love! I enjoyed this poem because of the word choice and the rhythm of it.
Travels with John Hunter by Les Murray • This poem has one the best verses ever • Describes his liver failure and his struggles in the hospital • “when we stop feeding them the earth. I had, it did seem, rehearsed the private office of the grave, ceased excreting, made corpse gases “
I felt a funeral in my brain by Emily Dickson • Uses the beating of drums to show the person losing care and emotion • At the end she seems to die. I think this is metaphorical of loss of hope and happiness
The reason I chose the subject I did • For the reason of standing out • Pure art comes from pure pain
