China • Chinese goods were in high demand by Europeans • China was reluctant to trade • Kept a favorable balance of exporting more than importing • Trade shifted in Westerners favor • Industrial revolution caused China to need European goods • The Opium War • Chinese became addicted to drug and wanted it banned • British said no • War ensued

China • Chinese were easily defeated by British warships • England forced China to sign treaties • Granted them Hong Kong • Opened up more trading posts • More war led to France, Russia, and the US gaining more trading ports • Taiping Rebellion • Questioned Qing Dynasty • Peasant revolt • Crippled the Dynasty • Made China very weak

China • Due to War and Rebellions, many Chinese felt a change to Western ways was needed • Others still disagreed with many aspects • Religion, technology • Ci Xi, empress of China, stuck to her Confucius roots • Decided to just strengthen the country • Imported some Western technology, but kept Confucian traditions • Not enough

  5. China • More Wars • Sino-Japanese War • Lost to Japan • China became too weak to defend itself • European powers seized their opportunity • Claimed many Chinese territories • US sets up Open Door Policy • Allows anyone to trade • Did not consult Chinese officials

China • More reforms followed • More modernization • Not everyone approved and it was met with more rebellion • Boxer Rebellion • People were fed up with Foreign influence • Formed secret society, the Righteous Harmonious Fists • Fought against foreigners • Were put down and China was forced to make more concessions

  7. China • China was now becoming more and more Westernized • Economy expanded and more rights were given to citizens • Still not Chinese Traditions • After Qing Dynasty finally fell, China became a Republic • Still faced many problems
