  2. I. The Opium Wars A. Little trade between China & the West, except for silk & tea for silver which favored China 1. British bring technology gifts to China, Chinese are unimpressed B. Next, British bring opium from India to China 1. 1835: 12 million Chinese were hooked on the drug 2. Qing (Ching) Emperor tries to ban opium a. Queen Victoria ignores him and Britain continues trading in Opium Stop selling drugs to our people! Poppy Plant C. 1839: China tries to destroy British opium. Britain starts “Opium Wars” Deal with it! 1. Chinese lose the war 2. 1842: Treaty of Nanjing gives: • Britain island of Hong Kong • extraterritorial rights (foreigners not subject to Chinese Law)

Taiping Rebellion B. 1864: Empress Cixi(Tsoo She) asks British & French to help defeat Hong’s army since 20 million+ killed in Taiping Rebellion A. 1850: Hong Xiuquan(Hong Shio Chuen) recruits peasant army to remove Qing Government, starting the Taiping Rebellion 1. Hong defeated, Empress “owes” Britain & France but rest of Europe & Japan want Spheres of Influence in China C. Fearing another “Scramble for Africa”, the U.S. negotiates the Open Door Policy, which allowed all nations trade with China III. Boxer Rebellion A. New Qing Emperor wants to end Open Door Policy. 1. He is arrested & Empress Cixi returns B. 1900: Angry Chinese form the Boxers, began a revolt known as the Boxer Rebellion 1. Although the Boxers were beaten, Chinese & West know reform is needed
