  1. FACILITY NETWORK DESIGN TO HANDLE ALL THAT INCOMING DIGITAL MATERIAL Rick Stora Director of Broadcast Operations Sundance Digital

  2. TWO DISTINCT NETWORKS: A Video Network And An Operations Network

  3. THE VIDEO NETWORK: Digital Satellite Receivers Broadband IP Transcode devices Server Interconnections Goal: Move large quantities of data around at Real Time or F.T.R.T speeds Physical connections: Fiber, Fibre, GigE

  4. THE OPERATIONS NETWORK: Traffic Automation (On Air, Prep, Recording & Digital Ingest) Streaming Machine Control Goal: Support database communication for metadata sharing and consolidation Support deterministic control of broadcast devices

  5. INTERNETWORK COMMUNICATIONS: Essence Connections Metadata Connections Control Connections

  6. “I.T. DOES TV” EssenceA recently coined phrase todepict actual media: FilmTapeDigital File

  7. “I.T. DOES TV” MetadataAnother recently coined phrase to depict the data that describes actual media: TitleDurationSOM/EOMMedia Type or File Format

  13. BroadcastServer Traffic CachingServers Streamer Transcode Automation Archive DigitalIngest Record Prep BroadcastPeripherals Automation confirms or updates the metadata with the Traffic system Meanwhile, the Transcoder makes a low resolution file for the streamer EVENT: New Digital Content

  14. BroadcastServer Traffic CachingServers Streamer Transcode Automation Archive DigitalIngest Record Prep BroadcastPeripherals EVENT: Schedule Change Automation driving the system normally from a running Play List

  15. Traffic Automation EVENT: Schedule Change 1) Traffic system requests a current copy of the playlist 2) Automation returns the list in XML format The Traffic Office determines that a schedule change to the running list is required. 3) Traffic Operator makes the adjustment 4) Just before submission, Traffic makes a second request for the list and checks to see if the changes are still valid 5) If so, the changes are passed to Automation 6) Automation inserts the changes to the list and confirms back to Traffic

  20. REAL SYSTEM DESIGN You wouldn’t ask an Electrician to design your video networks. I advise that you all consider utilizing the services of a professional I.T. design engineer as you embark on your I.T. build outs. There is plenty for you to contribute to the process as most I.T. designers have never had to wrestle with the performance loads and requirements that we are asking our systems to do.

  21. Thank You
