  3. Pre-Planning • Most important phase • Process of identifying needs and communicating those needs • Consider not only the program and educational needs but also finances, enrollment factors, and communicating with those outside the profession

  5. Some General Considerations • Ceiling • Floors • Walls • Lighting • Electrical service • Plumbing service • Telephone service • Entrance/exit doors

  6. Keep in mind • Computers • Walkie-talkies or cell phones • Emergency lighting and electricity • Multiple phone lines • Limit the number of people with keys • Main office unobstructed view of entire ATR • Available natural light • Drainage • Noise control • Traffic flow • OSHA compliance

Develop Schematics • Graphical representations of what your needs and wants are for the facility • Determining space needs • Min “bare bones “ is 300 sq ft • General: total square footage = (# patients at peak/ 20per table per day) X 100 • Proportion of work done in each section • Anticipated growth

Developing Schematics • Traffic Patterns • Flow of people between areas • Develop a relationship chart • ID subfunctions and justify space and location by placing them on a relationship chart • Use coding systems provided • Bubble diagram • Constructed next • Based on closeness • Not a floor plan; shows how the spaces should be laid out
