  4. 13 Colonies aka United States • Total Population was 2.5 million ppl • 15% did not support the American revolution. • (375,000 people did not agree with the revolution). • 100,000 left the States • 50,000 went to British North America

  5. Loyalists • A variety of different people… they had little in common except? • Opposed to the revolution

  6. Loyalists • Merchants (store owners) & farmers • Abandoned their property in the Thirteen colonies

  7. Loyalists • Small landowners, former British soldiers & people hoping for religious tolerance • Had little possessions • Hoped to become rich in British North America

  8. Loyalists • Indentured Servants • Under contract to work for a family for a number of years before becoming free people

  9. Loyalists • Black Slaves • Accompanied their Loyalist owners

  10. Loyalists • Escaped Black Slaves • Used the migration as a way of escaping from their owners and becoming free people

  11. SACRIFICE • Many loyalists sacrificed their entire way of life to move to British North America • Read pg 91 (Italics)

  12. Honour • The sacrifice of the loyalists was acknowledged • Received assistance from the crown • Sir Guy Carleton (Governor of Quebec 1789) issued an order to honour the Loyalists
