  1. Balancing Equations O atom H atom During chemical changes matter cannot be created or destroyed. It is merely rearranged. Example hydrogen + oxygen =====> water 2H2 + O2 ====> 2 H2O

  2. Notice there are the same number and kinds of atoms on both sides of the equation. O atom H atom 2H2 + O2 ====> 2 H2O

  3. This principal must be followed when writing chemical equations. Here are some examples: hydrogen + iodine ===> hydrogen iodide H2 + I2=====> HI 2 Products Reactants How can this equation be balanced?

  4. Another example is: 2 Products Reactants carbon tetrachloride carbon + chlorine CCl4 C + Cl2 How can this equation be balanced?

  5. Another example is: 2 2 Products Reactants sulfur dioxide sulfur trioxide + oxygen SO3 SO2 + O2 How can this equation be balanced?

  6. Rules for Balancing Equations 1. Make sure all formulae are correct 2. Balance the elements in the fewest # of compounds 1st. 3. Always work from a partly balanced formula to one that has not yet been balanced 4. If in the final stages of balancing, you end up with an odd # of atoms on one side of the equation and an even # of atoms on the other side, double everything balanced.
