  2. Revelation 2:13 I know where you live – where Satan’s throne is! And you are holding on to My name and did not deny your faith in Me, even in the days of Antipas, My faithful witness who was killed among you, where Satan lives.

  3. Revelation 2:14-15 14 But I have a few things against you. You have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam…. 15 In the same way, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

  4. The false teaching of Balaam You have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block in front of the Israelites: to eat meat sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality. Revelation 2:14

  5. The false teaching of the Nicolaitans In the same way, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Revelation 2:15 The false teaching of the Nicolaitans You (the church in Ephesus) hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. Revelation 2:6

  6. Warning to church “members” Do not listen to the words of the (false)prophets…. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the LORD’S mouth. Jeremiah 23:16 Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravaging wolves. Matthew 7:15

  7. Warning to church “members” Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1

  8. Warning to church “members” For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 2 Timothy 4:3

  9. Warning to pastors/elders 28 Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock that the Holy Spirit has appointed you to as overseers…. 30 …men will rise up with deviant doctrines to lure the disciples into following them. 31 Therefore be on the alert…. Acts 20:28, 30, 31

  10. What makes a person • a “false teacher?” • False teachers • distort major doctrines • AND/OR • have ulterior motives.

  11. False Teachers …(false teachers) overthrow whole households by (content:)teaching what they shouldn’t (motive:) in order to get money dishonestly. Titus 1:11

  12. But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly bring in (content:) destructive heresies, even denying the Master…. (motive:)They will exploit you in their greed with deceptive words. 2 Peter 2:1, 3

  13. What makes a person • a “false teacher?” • False teachers • distort major doctrines • AND/OR • have ulterior motives.

  14. So what do we do now? Keep your eyes open, don’t be gullible, and “test” what you hear. BUT, don’t “play angry.” Live with joy and trust! Don’t be too eager to label someone as a false teacher.

  15. The people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, since they welcomed the message with eagerness and examined the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Acts 17:11

  16. So what do we do now? If you determine that someone is a false teacher: stop listening to them, or listen with exceeding discernment
