Sexual Health What is it?
STIs: Sexually Transmitted Infections • WHO Definition: “infections that are spread primarily through person-to-person sexual contact.” • Bacterial vs. Viral Infections Source: WHO, 2011
Chlamydia • Type: Bacterial • Transmitted: Vaginal, oral, or anal sex • Symptoms: Mild to none • Risks: Can cause pain and ultimately infertility • Testing: Specimen or urine • Treatment: Antibiotics Source: CDC, 2011
Gonorrhea • Type: Bacterial • Transmitted: Vaginal, penile, oral, or anal contact • Symptoms: Mild to none • Risks: Can cause infertility and can be life threatening • Testing: Specimen or urine • Treatment: Antibiotics Source: CDC, 2011
Syphilis • Type: Bacterial • Transmitted: Vaginal, penile, oral, or anal contact • Symptoms: 3 stages: chancres rash muscle problems, blindness, dementia • Risks: Damage to internal organs • Testing: Specimen or blood test • Treatment: Antibiotics Source: CDC, 2010
HPV: Human Papillomavirus • Type: Viral • Transmitted: Genital contact • Symptoms: None to serious • Risks: Genital warts, cancers • Testing: For symptoms and risks, not HPV itself • Treatment: For symptoms, not HPV itself Source: CDC, 2009
Herpes • Type: Viral • Transmitted: Skin-to-skin contact • Symptoms: Mild to none, blisters • Risks: Can cause recurrent or chronic painful genital sores and pregnancy complications • Testing: Visual inspection, sample, or blood test • Treatment: Of symptoms, not the virus Source: CDC, 2010
HIV/AIDS • Type: Viral • Transmitted: Vaginal, anal, oral sex • Symptoms: None to initally flu-like • Risks: Other diseases, cancers • Testing: Blood test, oral swab, urine • Treatment: Antiretroviral drugs Source: CDC, 2010
