  5. Literacy • “Literacy” is the ability to read and write • In Delaware, around 89% of people are literate • Think of all the things we can do because we know how to read! • How often do we have to read during the day? • In Afghanistan, the female literacy rate is 12% • Total population: 34%

  6. School Favorite classes? Favorite part of the day? How does everyone get to school? Who plans to go to high school? College? In Afghanistan, 40% of girls go to primary (elementary) school 6% of girls go to secondary school (middle/high school) What would your life be like without school? What would you miss the most? How would you make friends?

Our Opportunities • What do you want to be when you grow up? • This question has a totally different meaning for girls in Afghanistan • Who wants to get a driver’s license someday? • Who thinks they want to get married one day? When? • The power to make these kinds of decisions are privileges that girls in Afghanistan don’t have…

  8. In Afghanistan… • Men are in charge of the decisions that govern a woman’s life: • Girls are married in arranged marriages, that can be arranged before they are even born • Many girls get married when they are 10 to 12 years old • There is usually an economic reason for this…meaning their fathers get paid for their marriage. • Girls cannot drive cars in Afghanistan • The major jobs that women can have (women that are allowed to work) are as farmers or seamstresses
