STAGE 5 SCIENCE • Based on all of your Year 9 and 10 work as well as skills gained from Years 7 and 8 • It is important that you revise regularly – at least twice a week – this is as well as completing assessment tasks and homework • Revision includes summarising information (and learning the information) + completing practice questions • Know your assessment schedule – so that you maximise your school assessment mark that is put into the Board of Studies • Have a study timetable – IT IS VITAL THAT YOU PLAN AND ALLOCATE YOUR TIME OTHERWISE YOU WILL NOT ACHIEVE YOUR POTENTIAL – This will assist your organisational skills in Year 11/12 • Go to Homework Centre at least once a fortnight so that you seek that extra assistance you might require (Mr Broadfoot – Science Teacher will be at the Homework Centre each Wednesday for Term Two)

EXAM FORMAT • Section 1 : 50 Multiple Choice questions – 50 marks • Section 2 : 10 One Word answer questions – 10 marks • Section 2 : Short answer questions – 40 marks • Stimulus booklet can be provided • TIME : 2 hours • EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: * ruler * red/blue/black pens * lead pencil + sharpener + eraser * calculator

Multiple Choice Questions • Go to the www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au • Scroll down to “HSC & SC Test Yourself” • Click on “multiple choice quiz” • Choose Science • Choose the number of questions you want to complete (they are randomly chosen from previous papers) • Complete the questions in the allocated time (approximately 45 seconds per question) • Go through the answers (the computer marks your questions) • Complete practice questions at least once a week for each SC exam subject

  6. One Word Questions (10 marks) • 10 questions worth one mark each • Usually knowledge and understanding • One letter per box – important you write neatly, as this part is computer marked

Short Answer Questions • Worth various marks • Based on knowledge and understanding as well as skills (including scientific methodology) • PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE AND THEN MORE PRACTICE • HINTS : • ALWAYS LOOK AT THE VERB AT THE BEGINNING OF THE QUESTION • IF THE QUESTION IS WORTH 4 MARKS YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU PROVIDE 4 ANSWERS • ALWAYS USE A RULER IF CONSTRUCTING A TABLE + TRY TO HAVE 3 COLUMNS + USE A HEADING • USE A LEAD PENCIL TO DRAW ANY DIAGRAMS + DRAW IN 2d • USE A “X” WHEN PLOTTING ON A LINE GRAPH • LABEL ALL AXIS (including units) + USE A HEADING + USE AN APPROPRIATE SCALE ON BOTH AXIS (equal distances for equal amounts) + USE A KEY WHERE NEEDED • SOME GRAPHS NEED A “LINE OF BEST FIT” NOT JOIN THE CROSSES • MOST GRAPHS SHOULD BE A LINE GRAPH UNLESS IT IS VERY CLEAR IT SHOULD BE SOMETHING ELSE • ALLOW YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME TO ANSWER THIS SECTION

  8. FINALLY - • Seek assistance when required – ask lots of questions and listen to the answers • Have a balanced life – family, school, work and leisure • Use the available resources to achieve your potential
