  2. Self-report of Fruit and Vegetable Intake that meets the 5 A Day Recommendation is Associated with Reduced Levels of Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Increased Levels of Antioxidant Defense in Premenopausal Women Study Design and Key Methods Serum Vitamin C (mg/dl) by Salad Intake • The BioCycle Study was a longitudinal study of healthy premenopausal women (n=258) • Data collected for ≤ 2 menstrual cycles with ≤ 16 oxidative stress measures timed to cycle phase • Determination of antioxidant and oxidative stress by blood analysis: • F2-isoprostane • 9-hydroxyoctadecadieneoic acid (9-HODE) • 13-hydroxyoctadecadieneoic acid (13-HODE) • superoxide dismutase • glutathione reductase • glutathione peroxidase • Micronutrients including vitamin E, vitamin C, and vitamin A • 24-hour recalls (up to 4 per cycle) and a food frequency questionnaire (1 per cycle) were used to determine fruit and vegetable intake • Linear mixed models with repeated measures were used to analyze antioxidant and oxidative stress markers by cycle phase in association with usual fruit and vegetable intake Rink SM et al.J Acad Nutr Diet. 2013; 113(6). 3. Self-report of Fruit and Vegetable Intake that meets the 5 A Day Recommendation is Associated with Reduced Levels of Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Increased Levels of Antioxidant Defense in Premenopausal Women Characteristics of premenopausal women meeting the 5 A Day recommendation Serum Vitamin C (mg/dl) by Salad Intake • Only 46 subjects (17.8%) met 5 A Day • Women who met the recommendation were more likely to be: • Older (29.3 vs. 26.8 years, p=0.06) • White (78% vs. 55%, p=0.01) • Higher income (9% vs. 24% < $20,000/year, p=0.10) • Married (46% vs. 21%, p=0.001) • Parous (39% vs. 23%, p=0.03) • Past oral contraceptive users (78% vs. 50%, p=0.0005) Rink SM et al.J Acad Nutr Diet. 2013; 113(6). 4. Self-report of Fruit and Vegetable Intake that meets the 5 A Day Recommendation is Associated with Reduced Levels of Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Increased Levels of Antioxidant Defense in Premenopausal Women Meeting 5 A Day was associated with lower oxidative stress Serum Vitamin C (mg/dl) by Salad Intake Betas and 95% confidence intervals Estimates based on cycle-specific FFQ. Adjusted for age, race, income, marital status, parity, past oral contraceptive use, and total energy intake. Rink SM et al.J Acad Nutr Diet. 2013; 113(6). 5. Self-report of Fruit and Vegetable Intake that meets the 5 A Day Recommendation is Associated with Reduced Levels of Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Increased Levels of Antioxidant Defense in Premenopausal Women Meeting 5 A Day was associated with lower antioxidant activity Serum Vitamin C (mg/dl) by Salad Intake Betas and 95% confidence intervals Estimates are based on cycle-specific FFQ. Adjusted for age, race, income, marital status, parity, past oral contraceptive use, and total energy intake. Rink SM et al.J Acad Nutr Diet. 2013; 113(6). 6. Self-report of Fruit and Vegetable Intake that meets the 5 A Day Recommendation is Associated with Reduced Levels of Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Increased Levels of Antioxidant Defense in Premenopausal Women Meeting 5 A Day was associated with higher antioxidant vitamin levels Serum Vitamin C (mg/dl) by Salad Intake Betas and 95% confidence intervals Estimates are based on cycle-specific FFQ. Adjusted for age, race, income, marital status, parity, past oral contraceptive use, and total energy intake. Rink SM et al.J Acad Nutr Diet. 2013; 113(6).
