  1. 37.Water Quality Testing • EQ: How can we determine the safety and drinkability of our water supplies? • LT: I can describe the indicators of water quality and what are acceptable levels . • POU: I will identify the indicators of water quality. I will determine whether or not a sample of water is in the normal range for a particular water quality indicator. I will compare samples of water in the water quality tests lab.

  2. Welcome! Warm Up 3/24/14 What are two factors that will increase the number of fish the ocean? • Upwelling zone and photosynthesis • Upwelling zone and chemosynthesis • Hydrothermal vent and photosynthesis • Hydrothermal vent and chemosynthesis • Enter your response at www.goo.gl/vta7d1

  3. Table of Contents 1 Title Assignment Diagram River Basin to Estuary 17 Wetlands and Estuaries Vocab 18 Estuary Ecosystems 19 Ocean Food Webs 20 Ocean Properties 21 Ocean Zones and Layers 22 Groundwater Notes and Soil Testing 23 Water Filtration Notes and Vocab 24 Water Quality Indicators (Handout) 25 Water Quality Lab 26

  4. Notes: Indicators of Water Quality • There are 6 indicators of water quality that we are going to study: • Turbidity • pH • Dissolved Oxygen • Temperature • Nitrates/Ammonia • Bio-Indicators

  5. Turbidity: measure of the degree to which water looses its transparency due to the presence of suspended particulates (“tiny particles”) Definition:

  6. pH: the acidity of the water (presence of hydrogen ion) 07 is acidic 7 is neutral 714 is basic Definition:

  7. Dissolved Oxygen: the oxygen dissolved in the water Definition:

  8. Temperature: measure of average kinetic energy Definition:

  9. Nitrates: compound that contains the nitrogen based polyatomic ion NO3 (Ex: Sodium Nitrate) Definition:

  10. Water Quality Tests LAB • Today you will have the opportunity to conduct water quality testing of three samples of water: • pond water • dirty soil water • Filtered water
