  3. Balance • Also known as equilibrium, balance is the feeling of being comfortable in artwork; where the elements are placed in the picture in a way so they have equal weight. There are two kinds of balance: • Symmetrical or formal balance: objects are centered • Asymmetrical or informal balance: objects are off to one side or off center

  4. Repetition Also known as pattern, repetition is when elements in a design are repeated either identical to each other or varying in colour, shape, or size.

  5. Movement Also known as rhythm, movement is the path our eyes follow in a composition or design. Usually it brings the viewer in, around, and through the piece.

  6. Emphasis Emphasis draws attention to the main object/element in a composition or design. When one object is emphasizes above all others, it is called a focal point. All elements, such as line, colour, and shapes, should direct the viewer’s eye to the main point/focal point in a composition.

  7. Contrast • Contrast is when elements are opposite or varied. Contrast makes an artwork interesting and also organizes a work around a focal point. • Examples of contrast: • Contrasting colours • Thick/thin lines • Large/small shapes • Rough/smooth texture

  8. Unity Also known as harmony or oneness, unity is the feeling produced by successful design in which that all the elements in the piece are paired with the principles to form a successful design or composition.
